Lucid’s RangeXchange Charges with V2V Tech

two Lucide Air EVs using the rangeXchange charging
  • Using RangeXchange, a Lucid Air can charge another electric vehicle (EV), adding between 24 to 40 miles of range per hour, using V2V technology.
  • To use RangeXchange, Lucid owners attach the Lucid RangeXchange charging adapter to the charging cable and then plug it into the receiving car.
  • Lucid’s groundbreaking, innovative bi-directional Wunderbox, along with its proprietary software, enables this amazing capability for all Lucid vehicles.

In the ever-evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs), Lucid Motors, a proud recipient of the 2023 World Luxury Car Award for its Lucid Air model, has once again raised the bar with its latest innovation in Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) technology, the RangeXchange adapter. This remarkable development, initially available to U.S. customers, enables Lucid Air owners to directly charge other EVs, adding between 24-40 miles of range per hour. It’s a game-changer that shows how dedicated Lucid is to advancing technology and making EVs more sustainable.

The concept behind RangeXchange is refreshingly simple. If you own a Lucid Air, you can use this nifty adapter to lend a helping hand to fellow EV drivers in need of a charge. It’s like being the good Samaritan of the EV world, providing a boost when it’s needed most.

To get started, Lucid Air owners can attach the Lucid RangeXchange charging adapter to their charging cable and plug it into the receiving car. That’s it! The magic happens thanks to Lucid’s bi-directional Wunderbox and their proprietary software.

“I’m delighted that Lucid continues to innovate, enabled by our integrated fusion of software and hardware,” said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid. “RangeXchange is a small step to further enhance the everyday usability of the electric vehicle.”

Lucid’s bi-directional charging technology, embodied in the Wunderbox, is more than just a piece of hardware; it’s innovation in the making. It doesn’t just charge the battery pack; it opens up a world of possibilities for EVs.

“Designed and engineered in-house by Lucid, the Wunderbox is far more than just a piece of hardware that charges the battery pack,” said Eric Bach, Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid.

Aside from helping out other EVs today, the Wunderbox lays the foundation for future applications like vehicle-to-home backup power, time-of-use (TOU) optimization, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power. Lucid’s forward-thinking approach to hardware and software integration sets them apart in the auto industry.

“RangeXchange is yet another example of the tremendous value we can provide with an over-the-air software update long after a customer purchases our car,” said Mike Bell, Senior Vice President of Digital at Lucid. “This system’s approach to the integration of hardware and software is what allows us to provide these value-added updates and is what sets Lucid apart in the auto industry.”

The RangeXchange feature is initially being introduced to the United States customer base. The capability necessitates the purchase of a separate RangeXchange charging cable adapter, which will be made available exclusively through Lucid later this month. The functionality of this feature will be realized through an over-the-air (OTA) software update. This update will equip Lucid Air vehicles with this innovative feature, further enhancing the vehicle’s versatility.
