  • StoreDot announced an exciting collaboration with the electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar, on the development of an innovative prototype vehicle, which will be equipped with extreme fast-charging (XFC) batteries.
  • The two companies are now exploring how ‘100-in-5’ technology can be used in automotive production.
  • ‘100-in-5’ cells supplied by StoreDot deliver an impressive 100 miles of driving range in only five minutes of charging with no EV battery degradation.

StoreDot, a trailblazer in the development of extreme fast charging (XFC) batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), initiated an advanced engineering project in partnership with Polestar. This collaboration aims to explore, from a technical standpoint, how XFC battery cell technology can be integrated into an existing platform and conceptualize what a production-level solution would resemble.

The announcement of this ground-breaking initiative was made on November 9, 2023, also known as “Polestar Day,” in Los Angeles, California. Alongside this announcement, StoreDot showcased their ‘100-in-5’ XFC cell charging technology, and a prototype of a Polestar battery module was displayed, further emphasizing the potential and efficiency of this partnership.

Following Polestar’s investment in StoreDot and as part of an ongoing strategic partnership, the two companies have deepened their collaboration to demonstrate StoreDot’s production-ready XFC technology at full scale in a Polestar 5 prototype vehicle, set to be unveiled in 2024. This collaboration goes beyond just the integration of the battery, encompassing key aspects such as innovative engineering design and advanced cooling systems.

These elements are critical in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and longevity of the XFC batteries under various operating conditions. This partnership signifies a shared commitment between Polestar and StoreDot to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, making EVs more practical and appealing to a wider audience.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, said: “This is a huge step for StoreDot and a strong endorsement that our ground-breaking technology is readying for mass production. We are extremely pleased and proud that Polestar aims to be the first automotive company to showcase our extreme fast charging battery cells in a full-scale, driveable prototype. Polestar is already a strategic investor in our business, but this really cements and builds on our collaboration. We still have lots of work to do to fully integrate our systems into a production car, but our teams are already fully engaged, and we will be demonstrating those results in the coming months. We can’t wait to see this technology in the hands of customers taking advantage of such game-changing charging speeds.”

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said: “StoreDot was our first financial investment in another company, and we have been collaborating with them to apply their advanced technology in proof-of-concept Polestar cars. StoreDot’s pioneering extreme fast charging batteries, combined with our upcoming top-of-the-line electric powertrain, can revolutionize the ownership experience for EV owners with the ability to recharge in minutes.”
