Segway Takes on the 125cc Class

Segway isn’t just a stand-up brand anymore, and now the electric scooter brand is taking on the 125 cc scooter market.

If you live in an urban area in Europe or Asia, it’s pretty likely you know someone with an electric scooter or other small-capacity electric moto. Heck, maybe you own one yourself. After all, these e-scooters and e-motos are cheaper to “fuel” and maintain, and they cost about the same as their gas-powered counterparts thanks to government subsidies.

Enter Segway. Obviously they already have an established presence in the electric micromobility segment. And now they’ve launched a new electric scooter, the E 300 SE. This marks the brand’s expansion into larger, more mainstream electric two-wheelers.

The E 300 SE is a 125cc-equivalent machine, falling into the L3e-A1 class, meaning it can be operated with an A1 license in Europe (that’s the category for light motorcycles). It sits above the Segway E 110 and E 125, which are classified as mopeds and require only an AM license in the European Union.

The E 300 SE is an impressive moto, with a top speed of 65 miles per hour and acceleration from zero to 50 km/h (31 mph) in just 2.9 seconds. It can cover up to 130 kilometers (81 miles) on a single charge when fitted with three batteries. The Segway E 300 SE incorporates electronic rider aids like traction control and ABS (which comes standard), as well as dual-piston front brakes.

The scooter has a bit of a futuristic feel, including the fact that it comes with a key card with RFID technology instead of a manual key.

With ever more options entering the market from both new and experienced brands, the electric scooter market is set to keep booming. The E 300 SE offers premium technology and impressive performance, making it a potentially worthy addition to the market.
