  • IONNA to install 30,000 charging ports in North America by 2030, supporting all BEV drivers with NACS and CCS connectors.
  • IONNA’s charging stations will offer amenities and conveniences beyond just electric vehicle charging.

Toyota Motor North America (Toyota) has invested in IONNA, a joint electric vehicle (EV) charging venture by seven major automakers. Teaming up with BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, Toyota is backing IONNA’s big plan to build a powerful charging network for electric cars across North America.

A New Dawn for EV Charging

When Ted Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America, announced, “We are excited to announce our support of IONNA to deploy DC fast chargers throughout the U.S. and Canada,” he wasn’t just speaking about infrastructure. He was highlighting a vision for the future where EV charging stations are as ubiquitous and accessible as gas stations.

Ogawa further emphasized that this initiative would “promote the adoption of BEVs and increase customer confidence in the technology,” ensuring that Toyota and Lexus customers have seamless access to IONNA’s rapidly expanding network.

IONNA plans to install at least 30,000 charging ports across North America by 2030. These will include both Tesla’s NACS and CCS connectors, making them usable for all BEV drivers. This initiative is vital for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, as it addresses a major concern for potential buyers: the availability and convenience of EV charging stations.

Enhancing the EV Experience

Convenience is king. IONNA understands this. Which is why their charging stations are designed with the holistic customer experience in mind. Beyond just charging cars, these stations will offer amenities and conveniences that cater to the needs of the modern driver.

As Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA, eloquently put it, “Their vision for the future of electric mobility in North America aligns perfectly with our mission to push the boundaries for the highest standards of quality, reliability, and customer experience.”

A Collaborative Effort

Toyota’s involvement with IONNA is part of a broader collaborative effort among major automakers to build a comprehensive public charging network. With BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis also in the fold, this united front is ready to take on the challenges of building a robust EV infrastructure together.

Toyota’s Electric Vision

Toyota is not new to the electric vehicle market. With the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ already available in the U.S. and Canada, and plans for two all-new three-row BEV SUVs to be assembled at their Kentucky and Indiana plants, Toyota is making positive movements. By 2030, Toyota plans to offer 30 different BEV models worldwide and produce up to 3.5 million BEVs each year.

The Bigger Picture

This investment in IONNA is not only a business strategy. It’s about making EVs a viable option for everyone, reducing our carbon footprint, and ensuring that our planet is a better place for future generations.

By focusing on creating a reliable and accessible EV charging network, and with the support of key players in the automotive industry, the goal of a sustainable, electric future is closer than ever.

And for us, the drivers, it’s about knowing that our choices on the road are contributing to a larger, positive impact on the world.
