  • ChargePoint, a leading EV charging company, announced its support for the groundbreaking Megawatt Charging System (MCS) in May 2024.
  • CharIN announced that the standardization process of MCS is in its final phase and that 13 suppliers are working on market preparation.
  • The MCS is widely thought to be the next standard for heavy-duty EV charging, rated for charging at a maximum rate of 3.75 megawatts (3,000 amps at 1,250 volts direct current.)

ChargePoint, a trailblazer in networked charging solutions and charging technology for EVs, announced its support for the groundbreaking Megawatt Charging System (MCS). This latest addition to ChargePoint’s acclaimed DC fast charging lineup represents a monumental leap in EV charging technology, capable of delivering enough energy to power approximately 1,000 homes.

The incredible charging rate of the MCS is set to revolutionize the electrification of commercial trucking, tackling electric semi trucks, one of the industry’s biggest challenges head-on.

ChargePoint’s MCS cable and connector will be featured on ChargePoint’s Power Link 2000 stations, part of the modular ChargePoint Express Plus DC fast charging platform. Initially capable of delivering up to 1.2 megawatts, the system supports bi-directional charging and is designed to scale up to 3 megawatts in the future, accommodating advancements in vehicle technology.

Moreover, the Megawatt Charging System is versatile, designed not only for trucking but also for marine and aviation applications, paving the way for a comprehensive shift toward sustainable transportation.

One example of an application for MCS is the new WattEV heavy-duty truck depot in Bakersfield, California, which opened in May 2024. All future WattEV depots will include MCS charging to charge electric freight trucks.

CharIN and the Megawatt Charging System

The Megawatt Charging System is a charging connector under development by CharIN for large battery-electric vehicles and other applications. The MCS connector will be rated for charging at a maximum rate of 3.75 megawatts (3,000 amps at 1,250 volts direct current).

CharIN is currently standardizing the MCS. CharIN is a leading global association, boasting over 300 members dedicated to promote standards in the field of charging systems for charging EVs of all types around the world. In May 2024, CharIN announced its standardization of MCS is in its final phase and that multiple suppliers are working on market preparation.

The CharIN MCS standard complies with the SAE J1772-based combined charging system (CCS). MCS is focused on Class 6-8 commercial vehicles with “huge battery packs” and the ability to accept a charge rate greater than 1 MW.

In 2018, CharIN set a new benchmark in the heavy-duty electric vehicle industry by launching the Task Force “Megawatt Charging System (MCS).” The CharIN MCS Task Force is a collaborative effort representing the entire value chain of the heavy-duty electric vehicle industry, ensuring a well-rounded and inclusive development process.

Today, the MCS Task Force is a vital component of the CharIN Focus Group “Charging Connection.” With the rapid electrification of heavy-duty electric trucks, light electric airplanes, ferries, and other marine vessels, the significance of the Megawatt Charging System has expanded dramatically. The group’s pioneering work is now essential for advancing electric mobility across various extended applications.

The U.S. Transportation Industry Is a Major Source of Pollution

With transportation being the largest polluting segment, this innovation is a major stride toward achieving global climate goals, along with electric commercial trucks.

Currently, the transportation industry in the U.S. alone is responsible for 28% of greenhouse gas emissions annually. The electrification of trucks, supported by robust charging infrastructure, will significantly curb this environmental impact.
