Say Goodbye to EV Charging Hassles with ChargePoint’s New Omni Port

ChargePoint New Omni Port
  • ChargePoint’s Omni Port combines common EV connector types into one port.
  • Omni Port supports current and future EV models, including 800-volt vehicles.
  • Omni Port allows drivers to select the correct connector type through the ChargePoint app or charger screen.

If you’re an EV driver, you know the drill: pulling into a charging station, only to find that the connector you need isn’t available. The frustration of carrying adapters, the annoyance of limited parking spaces dedicated to specific connectors—it’s enough to make anyone long for a simpler solution.

Well, that solution is finally here. ChargePoint has unveiled the ChargePoint Omni Port, an adaptable charging solution that combines the most common connector types into one seamless charging port. This means that whether you drive a Tesla or any other EV, you can charge without the need for extra adapters or the hassle of finding the right connector.

A Unified Charging Experience for All

With over 5.5 million EVs on North American roads, and a significant portion of them equipped with J1772 or CCS1 charging ports, the need for a universal charging solution has never been greater. ChargePoint’s Omni Port addresses this head-on. As Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, states, “Across hardware and software, ChargePoint is bringing to market innovative solutions that ensure all drivers who need to charge are able to do so.” This means that drivers can now expect a frictionless charging experience that is both convenient and reliable.

The Omni Port makes charging easier and more adaptable for the future. By adding this feature to some ChargePoint AC and DC charging stations, ChargePoint ensures these stations will be compatible with both today’s and tomorrow’s electric vehicles. This is especially important as car manufacturers work to standardize connector types, including the J3400, also known as the Tesla NACS port.

No More Adapters, Just Simple Charging

One of the key features of the Omni Port is that it removes the need for carrying multiple adapters. For example, you can arrive at a ChargePoint charging station, enter your vehicle’s make and model into the ChargePoint app, and start charging with just a tap. The station automatically releases the correct connector type. For those who prefer not to use the app, the correct connector can be selected directly on the charger screen. This level of ease and convenience makes charging as simple as possible for all drivers.

ChargePoint is dedicated to making charging as convenient as possible. The Omni Port supports vehicles with 800-volt systems, allowing for faster charging speeds over longer periods. This means you’ll spend less time waiting and more time on the road.

Supporting EV Growth and Adoption

As more EVs hit the road, the need for convenient and versatile charging solutions is growing. ChargePoint’s Omni Port addresses this need effectively. It combines the most common connector types into one charging port, ensuring that every EV driver can find a compatible charging option and won’t be left stranded.

Rick Wilmer stresses this commitment, saying, “With Omni Port, ChargePoint solved the challenges associated with a multiple connector environment, ensuring Tesla and non-Tesla drivers can continue to expect a world-class driver experience. We are giving drivers and site hosts assurance that ChargePoint will continue to meet all their charging needs now and in the future.”

A Future-Ready Solution

The Omni Port is set to begin shipping by the end of the year and can be retrofitted onto existing ChargePoint CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 models at a nominal cost. This modular approach allows station owners to upgrade their infrastructure without needing to replace entire chargers, demonstrating their commitment to flexible and innovative design for their customers.

No matter if you drive a Tesla or any other electric vehicle, the ChargePoint Omni Port makes charging simple and stress-free. Next time you visit a ChargePoint station, you can skip bringing your adapters and charge up effortlessly.
