Making the switch to EVs can seem cost-prohibitive for sure, but for those who are on a budget, you can actually find EVs for under $40K.

Here’s our roundup of some affordable but still fun EVs you can look forward to this coming year.

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Why not start off with one of the “classics”? Chevy first came out with the Bolt EV with the 2017 model year, and it’s been a steady, dependable little EV for all this time. 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV

Coming in the fall of this year, the 2024 Equinox EV is looking to be quite the powerhouse. 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric

2023 Kia Niro EV

2023 Mini Cooper SE

Once again, Mini brings the fun with the Cooper, this time in EV form. This peppy hardtop is more for the brand stans than anyone looking to really go the distance — it offers only 114 miles of range. 2023 Nissan LEAF

Another budget EV, the LEAF is even more of a mainstay in the electrified world than the Chevy Bolt, having first dropped in the U.S. in 2011. 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Is it cheating to include a plug-in hybrid on a list of top EVs under $40K? We guess that depends on whether or not you like the sound of 480 miles of range. 2023 VW ID.4

Volkswagen has dropped the price on the ID.4 for the 2023 model year, so this one gets to round out our list. The base trim still gives you 209 miles of range, standard driver assist technology, and some solid interior features. You’ll still need a reservation if you want one, though.
