Tesla Just Shy of Expectations, but Still Dominating
Tesla is still leading the electric car market, producing 470,000 vehicles in Q3. Although they slightly missed expectations with 462,890 deliveries, their hold on the EV market is strong. The Model 3 and Model Y remain their top sellers, making up most of those deliveries.
Beyond cars, Tesla is also growing its energy storage, deploying 6.9 GWh of storage products in the quarter. While some analysts might have hoped for higher delivery numbers, it’s undeniable that Tesla is still the powerhouse driving the industry forward.
Mitsubishi’s Plug-in Hybrid Success and Award Wins
Mitsubishi had a solid Q3, selling 31,588 vehicles, which is quite a jump from the same time last year. One of the stars is the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, which saw a 20.8% increase in sales, totaling 2,279 units.
Mitsubishi’s focus on electrification is proven by results and recognition. The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid earned the Family Green Car of the Year award from Green Car Journal for the third year in a row. This is no small feat, as Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal, highlights: “The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is an ideal choice for families desiring a versatile vehicle that speaks to electrification and decreased carbon emissions, without requiring sacrifices in capabilities or driving range.”
Nissan Keeps the Momentum Going with EV Sales
Nissan also reported impressive Q3 results, particularly with their fully electric ARIYA crossover. Sales were up 23.3% year-over-year, with 5,552 units sold during the quarter, pushing Nissan’s overall EV sales forward. Additionally, the Nissan LEAF, one of the more affordable options in the electric vehicle market, showed an impressive surge with a 187.5% increase in sales compared to Q3 2023.
These numbers clearly show that Nissan is making a big impact in the EV world, offering cars that blend advanced technology with affordability.

Kia’s Record-Breaking September for EV and Plug-in Hybrid Sales
At Kia, there’s plenty to be excited about. The company saw a 43% rise in EV sales and an 11% increase in plug-in hybrid sales, breaking a new record for September. Leading the way are the EV9 and EV6, with the EV9 GT-Line earning a spot on Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list, adding another win to Kia’s achievements.
While we don’t have the exact numbers for the electric Niro, a popular choice among drivers, it certainly played a role in Kia’s success. The Niro saw 1,687 units sold in September, contributing to its 25,132 units year-to-date. The Sportage, including the PHEV model, continued to shine with strong performance, reaching its best-ever year-to-date September sales with 11,163 units sold. Additionally, the Soul added to Kia’s overall growth, with 4,016 units sold in September, bringing its year-to-date total to 40,094 units.
“The double-digit growth in EV and PHEV sales shows Kia’s strong leadership as the industry moves toward electrification,” says Eric Watson, Kia America’s vice president of sales operations.
Toyota’s Electrified Lineup Continues to Grow
Toyota’s electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids, PHEVs, and BEVs) made up nearly half of their total Q3 sales, showing the brand’s commitment to offering diverse powertrain options. In Q3 2024, Toyota sold 255,863 electrified vehicles, which accounted for 48.4% of their total sales. This includes popular models like the RAV4 Prime and the bZ4X, both of which continue to attract consumers looking for electrified options.
Year-to-date, Toyota has sold over 710,000 electrified vehicles, representing 41.1% of their total sales, further solidifying their leadership in the electrified vehicle market.
Fiat and Dodge Add to the Mix
Fiat, now fully committed to electric with the launch of the 500e, saw U.S. sales soar by 118% in Q3 2024, driven by strong demand for the new model. Dodge also impressed with its plug-in hybrid Hornet R/T, which ranked in the top five best-selling PHEVs in the U.S, according to S&P Global Mobility U.S. State Registrations for Q3, with retail sales spiking 109% year-over-year.
Jeep continues to be a leader in plug-in hybrids, with the Wrangler 4xe remaining the best-selling PHEV in the U.S., selling 10,866 units in Q3 2024. The Grand Cherokee 4xe also performed well, contributing 3,019 units to Jeep’s overall sales. Meanwhile, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid ranked fourth among the top-selling PHEVs, with 3,009 units sold.
