Is the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance the Best Yet?

2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland Performance front profile
  • The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, offering over 500 horsepower.
  • It features a new adaptive damping system that adjusts to driver and road conditions in real time, optimizing ride and handling.
  • Despite the high performance and advanced features, the starting price is $52,990, making it more affordable than previous versions.

Tesla’s latest release, the Model 3 Performance, has raised the bar for compact luxury electric sedans. Not only is it a marked improvement over its predecessor, offering more power and advanced features, but it’s also priced lower. Yes, it’s faster, better-equipped, and—did we mention?—more affordable than the previous model. Tesla has also significantly improved the Model 3 Performance in every aspect while maintaining its reputation as a high-performance daily driver.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance features a performance-tuned chassis that incorporates the latest technology in Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH). Tesla’s engineers have designed bespoke chassis hardware to improve performance and stiffness while reducing weight. Key components like adaptive dampers with hollow damper piston rods, multi-sectioned stabilizer bars, ultra-high-strength steel springs, and stiffer suspension top mounts are all part of the package. According to Tesla, these updates create a “more capable, performance-oriented chassis” that maximizes the effectiveness of the new technologies.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance features the latest generation performance drive unit, the Performance 4DU. This new drive unit delivers a significant boost in power and torque, offering +22% continuous power, +32% peak power, and +16% peak torque compared to the previous Model 3 Performance. With these enhancements, drivers will experience faster acceleration, especially when cornering.

2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland Performance wheels, tires and brakes

Despite this increase in performance, the Model 3 Performance remains energy-efficient. Tesla reports a 2% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous generation, thanks to the new Pirelli P ZERO 4 performance tires, which offer lower rolling resistance and greater range.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is equipped with forged and staggered 20-inch wheels and Tesla-specific Pirelli P ZERO 4 performance tires, providing better traction out of corners while minimizing traction control interventions. The staggered wheel setup allows for optimized torque output and increased overall roll stiffness, enhancing both performance and comfort.

The new Adaptive Damping system adjusts to driver and road inputs in real time, optimizing ride and handling. This system is controlled by Tesla’s in-house software, allowing for future over-the-air updates to improve ride quality further. The new Track Mode V3 integrates motor controls, suspension controls, powertrain cooling, and Tesla’s Vehicle Dynamics Controller (VDC) under a single, unified system. This results in a more predictable and stable driving experience on the track.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance features a redesigned exterior with significant aerodynamic enhancements, including a front splitter, rear diffuser, and spoiler. These design elements contribute to a 5% reduction in drag, a 36% lift reduction, and a 55% improvement in front-to-rear lift balance, providing a smoother and more efficient ride.

Inside, the new Model 3 Performance offers sport seats with enhanced bolstering for a deeper and more engaging seating position. These seats provide better lateral support during cornering while remaining comfortable for everyday driving. The cabin is equipped with end-to-end NVH treatment, 360˚ Acoustic Glass, and improved body baffles and sealing for a quieter and more refined driving experience.

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is an impressive compact luxury electric sedan that combines power, efficiency, and style. With its performance-tuned chassis, adaptive damping system, and powerful drive unit, it sets a new standard for EV performance in my opinion. Priced at $52,990, or $40,490 after the Federal Tax Credit and estimated gas savings, it offers exceptional value for those seeking a high-performance EV.
