Car dealerships have long been the gatekeepers of the auto industry, but Amazon’s latest move with Amazon Autos changes everything. With Hyundai as its first partner, Amazon is delivering a streamlined car-buying experience that will deliver more sales to auto manufacturers who are able to get their dealer-base on board.

While dealerships will remain vital for service and support, advancements in technology and immersive experiences are reducing the reliance on in-person sales.

For other manufacturers who are unable or unwilling to get on board, it may significantly reduce ‘new sales prospect’ traffic. As a result, many dealerships might largely transition to service centers, while consumers turn to platforms like Amazon for a more streamlined and convenient car-buying experience.

Of course, with EVs, there is very little service.

With Amazon Autos, customers can browse, finance, trade in, and purchase vehicles entirely online, eliminating many of the frustrations typically associated with buying a car at a dealership.

Dealerships, already struggling to adapt to changing consumer expectations, now face the intimidating prospect of competing with the convenience and transparency of Amazon’s trusted platform.

The traditional car dealership experience often leaves customers feeling stressed, uncertain, and wary of unclear pricing. With Amazon Autos, those issues disappear. Hyundai shoppers in 48 U.S. cities can now browse inventory, secure financing, and trade in their old vehicle, all through the Amazon interface they already know and trust.

Buyers can then schedule a convenient pickup at their local dealership, creating a seamless hybrid of digital convenience and local support.

Fan Jin, Global Head of Amazon Autos, explained the intent behind the platform, “We’re partnering with dealers and brands to redesign car shopping—making it more transparent, convenient, and customer-friendly. With Amazon Autos, we’re bringing the simplicity and ease customers expect from Amazon to car shopping, one of their largest purchases.”

This platform doesn’t eliminate dealerships completely but incorporates them in a purposeful way. Rather than focusing on high-pressure sales tactics, dealerships become the handoff point for online transactions and continue to serve as essential hubs for service and maintenance.

Amazon Autos succeeds where traditional dealerships falter by addressing the fundamental pain points of the buying process. Transparent pricing eliminates haggling, trade-ins are handled online with ease, and financing is completed with a few clicks.

“Listing our inventory on Amazon is a game-changer for how we connect with car buyers,” said Steven Suh, General Sales Manager at South Bay Hyundai. “It allows us to showcase our vehicles to millions of daily shoppers, while setting our pricing upfront. Customers come in excited to pick up their new car, and we can build on those customer relationships from there.”

This model fits well in a tech-driven market. Electrify Expo, North America’s largest electric vehicle and technology festival, helps consumers make informed decisions by offering test drives, direct access to brand experts, and a chance to explore the latest mobility solutions, all in a relaxed, no-pressure environment.

“Electrify Expo is where consumers come to experience vehicles firsthand and get the education they need to make a purchase decision,” said BJ Birtwell, CEO and Founder of Electrify Expo. “It has become the new ‘auto mall,’ but a much-improved version—where consumers can get hands-on experiences with nearly every major auto manufacturer, receive quality education about electric vehicles, and now with Amazon Autos, purchase the vehicle they want in a seamless, no-haggle environment. So as more manufacturers adopt this new purchase platform, which still benefits dealers, Electrify Expo will become the most effective and efficient place to purchase EVs.”

This synergy creates an entirely new approach to car shopping. Imagine test-driving a Hyundai IONIQ 5 at Electrify Expo, discussing its features in-depth with brand experts, and completing your purchase on Amazon before leaving the event. For the consumer, it’s simple and satisfying. For dealerships, it shifts the focus to building trust and delivering value post-sale.

Hyundai is the first OEM to join Amazon Autos, but in my opinion, it likely won’t be the last. With Amazon Alexa Auto already integrated into vehicles from brands like Ford, GM, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Honda, Lucid, Rivian, VinFast, VW, and Nissan, I can speculate that these manufacturers might explore similar opportunities to leverage Amazon’s platform in the near future.

Alexa Auto’s integration, which allows drivers to control navigation, music, and smart home devices directly from their car, positions Amazon as a natural partner for connected car ecosystems.

For example, Ford, with its electric F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, and Rivian, with its R1S and R1T, are strong candidates to expand Amazon Autos’ offerings.

As more brands join the platform, features like leasing options will further expand its appeal. Hyundai’s early adoption demonstrates how technology-driven, consumer-focused design can change how vehicles are shopped for and acquired.

Leasing, often an entry point for buyers exploring new vehicle technologies like EVs, could become an integral part of the Amazon Autos offering. Paired with Electrify Expo’s immersive experiences, consumers can explore a vehicle, lease it online, and pick it up locally, all without stepping into a traditional showroom.

While the sales process moves increasingly online and into experiential spaces like Electrify Expo, dealerships remain indispensable. They provide critical services, such as ongoing maintenance and support, and act as local hubs for delivery and customer relationships. The dealership’s role is changing, not disappearing.

By adapting to this new model, dealerships can focus on creating memorable in-person moments, such as when customers pick up their vehicles, and strengthening long-term loyalty through exceptional service.

By combining online shopping, hands-on experiences, and local support, these platforms give consumers everything they need to make smart, confident choices.

For consumers, it’s a future filled with transparency, convenience, and trust. For dealerships, it’s an opportunity to adapt and collaborate with platforms like Amazon Autos to better serve today’s drivers.
