Next time you open up Uber, you might end up in the back of an EV! The ride-hailing giant says 15,000 Teslas are already in drivers’ hands!
Back in October, Hertz announced plans to make 50,000 fully electric Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles available for its drivers to, exclusively for use the Uber network as part of the company’s stated zero-emissions goal. As of today, the Ubers says that more than 15,000 drivers have taken them up on the offer to rent a Tesla through this program— and they’re making a real impact.
Together, Uber and Hertz say they’ve completed more than five million fully-electric Uber trips covering more than 40 million all-electric miles, helping many drivers say “goodbye” to gasoline all together.
“I haven’t had to use gas for six months,” said Manuel Barros of Boston, who’s been driving with Uber for nearly eight years. Barros found out about the partnership with Hertz through the Uber Driver app, and said that it was easy for him to reserve a Tesla— plus, he’s saving money! “When I had a gas car, I would spend $25-30 a day [on gasoline],” said Barros. “I’m saving almost $160 a week, if not more, driving an electric vehicle.”
Uber says their program is helping drivers and riders a chance to experience electric vehicles for themselves— many for the first time. As for Hertz, they’ve been making waves since their now-famous Super Bowl ad featuring NFL superstar QB, Tom Brady. You can watch it for yourself, below, then let us know what you think of Hertz and Ubers’ efforts to electrify their fleets in the comments.
