You know how we said that Honda had plans to launch 10 electric motos by 2025? Well it turns out one e-scooter may be even cheaper than its gas equivalent.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is busy working on electric vehicles for the Indian market, and apparently Atsushi Ogata, president of HMSI, said that the brand’s first electric scooter will be priced lower than the gas-powered Activa.
“We have completed the feasibility study. Our first electric product is under development. We expect the market for electric two-wheelers will reach around 3 million units by 2030. We want to bring in multiple models and have a 30% share in this category by the end of the decade,” said Ogata.
“The vehicle will be positioned below Honda Activa, which comes tagged between ₹72,000-₹75,000 [about $881-$919]. With this product, we are targeting customers who are looking at electric two-wheelers as an … affordable mid-range product … for specific use cases.”
This new scooter will have a top speed of 60 km/h (about 37 mph). We don’t have any details yet on range, but we can probably comfortably expect it to get around 60-80 km (37-49 miles).
Honda will have to battle it out with legacy two-wheeler brands Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors in the Indian market. Both have a significant presence in the segment already, with startups like Ather and Ola also making waves.
