The Magicycle Commuter is exactly what it says on the tin: a competent A-to-B machine that doesn’t look like an e-bike.
Not every e-bike needs crazy bells and whistles. Sometimes you just want a simple, straightforward commuter that’ll help you get from Point A to Point B. Enter Chinese brand Magicycle with the aptly named Commuter, a bare-bones two-wheeler built for easy transport (and not much else, let’s be honest). And now, it’s $500 cheaper – at “just” $1199 for a “Dawn Yellow” Commuter.
Take that, inflation!
The Magicycle doesn’t skimp on the big bits, with a 6061 aluminum frame that comes in both step-over and step-through options, though this seems tied to which color you choose. The step-over frame comes in Dawn Yellow (above) and Onyx Black, while the Milky Blue option is reserved for the step-through frame. This e-bike has no fancy drive motor, doesn’t come with a throttle, and has just a single-speed derailleur with a quiet, maintenance-free belt drive. But it does have a 350 W rear hub motor that can bring you up to 20 mph. The 52 V 7 Ah lithium battery takes just three to four hours to charge, and it offers a range of 30 to 40 miles.
It’s still not exactly a lightweight bike, coming in at 56 lbs., but it does have a total payload capacity of 265 lbs. And this minimalist bike still does offer a rear cargo rack, so Magicycle understands the basic needs of a lot of commuters.
For anyone looking to purchase a basic commuting bike that can get you around town – without drawing a lot of attention to the fact that you’re riding an e-bike – we think the new, cheaper Commuter could be a solid option.
