If you bought a Chevy Bolt EV before GM’s rebates kicked in earlier this year, they’ll give you $6,000 … if you promise not to sue them.
Last month, GM said that it would offer rebates to owners who had bought a Chevy Bolt EV – before the price for the 2023 model year version was slashed by $6,000. However, these early owners who want that rebate will have to waive their rights to sue GM if their vehicle’s battery pack catches on fire … which, you know, is kind of a thing Bolt EVs are known for.
GM’s gesture of “good will” is being extended to buyers (not lessors) of MY2020-2022 Bolts purchased in 2022, when new car incentives were at their lowest. A Bolt forum user posted an example of the letter they received when the program was first implemented. The full rebate amount does depend on multiple factors, including the model year and trim level.
Here’s the full part of the contract that notes what rebate seekers would have to give up:
“By nonetheless agreeing to this Release, I—both on my own behalf and on behalf of my heirs, agents, servants, beneficiaries, legal representatives, assigns, wards, executors, successors, and administrators—forever waive and release all claims, damages, or causes of action, either known or unknown, regardless of the legal or equitable theory, that I may have now or in the future arising out of or in any way relating to my Bolt vehicle(s), the battery defect, or the battery recalls, and including any claims or rights that I may have in connection with the class action, including any right to participate as a class member. This release is in favor of and includes General Motors Company, General Motors LLC, General Motors Holdings LLC, LG Chem, Ltd., LG Energy Solution, Ltd., LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc., LG Electronics, Inc., and LG Electronics USA, Inc. as well as all of their respective officers, directors, agents, employees, servants, subsidiaries, affiliated companies, subsidiaries, parent companies, insurers, authorized dealers, suppliers, divisions, predecessors, successors, heirs, and assigns.”
It’s worth noting that the percentage of Chevy Bolt EVs that caught fire was incredibly low, despite the media hype, and many in the industry consider the capable Bolt to be one of the best new car deals on the market. Currently, the starting MSRP for the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV is “just” $25,600.
