The Electrify Expo 2023 Industry Day in Austin featured a Fireside Chat with Sean Ackley, who is the Head of Charging & Energy at VinFast. During this chat with automotive journalist, Kristin Shaw, Sean discussed various aspects of the electric vehicle (EV) industry, including his background, trends in the EV space, VinFast’s approach to the market, and their focus on simplifying the Vinfast EV ownership experience.

Sean Ackley began by mentioning his background, noting that he has been involved in the EV space for about seven years. His career started in utility infrastructure construction, and he had the opportunity to work on installing the first EV chargers. This experience allowed him to combine his passion for cars and his expertise in electrical engineering.


From Niche to Mass Adoption

Over the past seven years, Sean has witnessed significant developments in the EV industry. He mentioned the evolution from first-generation chargers to the current generation. He highlighted that early adoption of EVs was often seen in e-bus and fleet programs, which helped scale the production of lithium-based batteries and reduce costs.

Sean emphasized that the industry has shifted from being niche-oriented to the verge of mass adoption. He expressed optimism about making EV technology more accessible to the masses.

Regarding VinFast EV ownership, Sean mentioned that while some might see them as newcomers, they are actively working to simplify and demystify EV technology for consumers. They aim to provide a broad portfolio of EV offerings to cater to different market segments, from early adopters to mainstream consumers.

One of their initiatives to simplify the VinFast EV ownership experience is their app, which integrates various charging network partners. This app allows VinFast customers to access multiple charging stations without the hassle of dealing with numerous charging apps and payment processes. It also provides features like route planning and pre-conditioning the car while it’s charging.


Advancing EV Infrastructure and Battery Tech: VinFast’s Vision

Sean discussed the importance of interoperability in the charging infrastructure, ensuring that different charging stations and networks work seamlessly together. He mentioned the Charging Experience Consortium, where industry partners collaborate to establish standards and improve the customer charging experience.

Regarding battery technology, Sean acknowledged the ongoing developments and the desire for longer ranges and faster charging. He emphasized that while advanced battery technologies are exciting, there is still room for smaller battery options that cater to different use cases, such as urban driving.

Sean also touched on the concept of connected cars and the potential for providing entertainment and services to EV owners while they charge. He mentioned that VinFast is exploring ways to enhance the in-car experience during charging downtime.
