  • Opting to install an EV charger at home makes charging incredibly convenient and unlocks the best pricing in almost all geographies.
  • Now is a good time to evaluate the best home EV charger for your needs, as all automakers are now switching to one type of charging connection.
  • This list compares five of the best home EV charging stations based on price, ease of installation and use, charging cable length, and app features.

Starting every day with a “full tank” is my favorite part of being an EV driver. The immediate benefits are not only this convenience, but it also tends to be the most affordable way to charge an EV. Installing a home EV charger carries the long-term bonus of increasing your home’s resale value. As the EV market share continues growing, a listing without the “home EV charging station” filter may not even show up in a Zillow search for current EV owners.

I’ve installed multiple home EV chargers, as I’ve lived in different properties and had different types of EVs (including an EV Harley). When I was considering which would be best EV charger for my home, I tried to consider my current and future needs, which are thankfully converging now that all automakers announced switching to one type of charging dock — the North American Charging Standard (NACS or “J3400”), originally used by Tesla.

Additional Thoughts on Our Top Pick

Everything changed this year with Tesla’s introduction of their Universal Wall Connector. That’s because there’s no more having to choose between which type of charger connector to get. It charges Teslas and non-Teslas alike now. Additionally, because Tesla enjoys tremendous volume, they have the (almost unfair) advantage of both outstanding quality and low price points.

Points of Caution

Pay attention to amp ratings: Some of the recommended units above can handle a range of amps; others require different models for different amperage inputs. This approach can allow for cost-savings by “right-sizing” the unit for your needs, but it means more homework at the beginning before you order any hardware.

Prices are for hardware only: The prices included in this list were accurate at the time of writing and are for the hardware product only (no professional electrical services — like installation). Most homes and buyers will need an electrician to complete the installation.

Thoughts on Installing a Dedicated Charger

We’ve talked here on Electrify News about why and if you should install a home EV charger, including the estimated total cost with professional installation. And while this list is about the best home EV charging stations as of March 2024, we did not consider any bidirectional chargers in this review; while they boast impressive capabilities, those are a substantially larger-scope project, with higher costs and more equipment needed. (Connect with us via the form below if that is a topic we should write about next).

Charging Ahead

The best part of a home EV charger is the luxury of greeting every sunrise with a full battery.  When you do it overnight, it’s less than your latte’s “oat milk upcharge” in most states. Adding it isn’t only “for now.” It’s an investment in your home’s future value and appeal. Choose the hardware that syncs with your current EV’s needs, and keeps the garage door open for future possibilities.
