At the Electrify Expo Industry Day 2024, held in Long Beach, California, a panel discussion on the integration of generative AI into the automotive industry featured notable speakers: Steve Schwinke from Sibros, Andy Shahbazian of Parry Labs, and Stefano Marzani from Amazon Web Services (AWS). Moderated by Ed Loh, Head of Editorial at MotorTrend, the session explored how advanced AI and better connectivity are set to transform electric vehicle (EV) design, infrastructure, and the user experience.
- Generative AI helps optimize electric vehicles by analyzing data to “right size” components like batteries, reducing costs and improving sustainability.
- Gen AI is transforming project management in the automotive industry by enhancing decision-making through extensive data analysis, leading to significant operational efficiencies.
- AI integration by AWS improves consumer interactions with features like autonomous driving and virtual test drives, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to vehicle performance and user engagement.

Steve Schwinke highlighted the role of deep connectivity in optimizing electric vehicles through data analysis. He illustrated how generative AI aids in analyzing extensive data sets to enhance product performance, citing an example where they helped “right size” a vehicle’s battery based on actual usage data, which resulted in cost savings that were passed down to consumers. Schwinke stressed, “The art of design is reductive, so we help them (companies) analyze millions of trips [taken] on electrified bikes. We right-size the battery so they can reduce their costs,” and enhance sustainability.
Andy Shahbazian spoke about the transformative shift in project management from design to delivery, facilitated by generative AI. He highlighted the importance of massive data analysis in improving decision-making and operational efficiency. “We needed that attention and that’s what happened to the process of getting massive amounts of data…it’s a titanic shift…a tectonic change happening across the industry,” Shahbazian explained.

Stefano Marzani talked about how AWS helps automotive companies leverage AI for tasks like autonomous driving and natural language processing inside electric vehicles. He shared insights on integrating AI to create immersive consumer experiences like virtual test drives. Marzani described generative AI as a breakthrough, noting, “machines learn to talk…it’s not just the car; it’s the car, the charging, your home, the energy…and so this is super important to have that plumbing.”
The speakers tackled the issues linked to generative AI, like data accuracy and the risk of producing incorrect results. They highlighted the importance of using clean data and practicing responsible AI. Loh highlighted the necessity of having safeguards and careful querying in place to reduce mistakes and guarantee that AI applications are safe and reliable.
Collectively, they all agreed that generative AI is crucial for boosting innovation and efficiency in the automotive industry. They emphasized the importance of pairing human oversight with advanced AI technologies to fully leverage this technology’s potential, ensuring safety and reliability. The conversation highlighted a hopeful future where generative AI not only transforms the automotive sector but also improves urban mobility and infrastructure planning on a larger scale.
