  • David Perez’s love for car audio began with a 1994 Mazda MX6, where he achieved 2nd place at the IASCA world finals. He’s now integrated a top-tier car audio system into his 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance.
  • A lifelong car enthusiast and mechanical engineer, David has been customizing high-performance vehicles since his teenage years.
  • David’s Tesla is equipped with an intricately designed air suspension system, showcasing his meticulous approach to customization. This setup, including a removable frunk hard-pipe assembly, made its successful debut at the Electrify Showoff in Washington, DC.

We’re diving into the high-voltage world of David Perez, the mastermind behind this custom 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance, affectionately known as “Double Stuffed.” David hails from Walworth, NY, and his journey from classic petrol-head to Tesla aficionado is nothing short of inspiring.

David’s love affair with high-performance vehicles started early, with dreams of the iconic Nissan 300ZX dancing in his head. Armed with a mechanical engineer’s precision and a touch of OCD, he’s not your typical car enthusiast.

David prefers to get his hands dirty, learning and executing new projects himself. It’s all about the thrill of the unique, the devil in the details, the thrill of the ride, and a dash of outrageous power. As he puts it, “Inspiration comes from having something unique, a lot of detail, good cruising, good handling, and good power.”

Building Dreams, Breaking Stereotypes

David’s hands-on experience spans over decades. His mechanical prowess shone through as he upgraded his beloved 300ZXs and crafted a phenomenal audio system for his Mazda MX6. Sadly, his masterpiece, the 1996 Nissan 300ZX TT, met an untimely end in an accident just before completion.

Still, this setback only fueled his determination to push the boundaries.

David’s 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance: A Triumph of DIY Engineering

Enter the 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance. David’s ambitious air suspension project, combined with a painstakingly over-engineered frunk hard-pipe setup, became a labor of love. He faced numerous challenges, from designing removable and serviceable components to extensive modifications of factory plastics.

Custom aluminum mounting brackets, billet aluminum risers, and countless hours of Fusion 360 design work all played their part. But David’s dedication paid off with a triumphant 7-hour drive to the Electrify Expo/Showoff in DC.

From Audio to Air Suspension: A Change in Plans

Originally, David’s plan centered on audio, suspension, and wheels for a stylish cruiser. However, fate had other ideas. A chance encounter with the Tesla “Bagged Life” community altered his course, leading to the jaw-dropping air suspension setup we see today.

David’s selection of brands was meticulous. His audio gear, featuring Mosconi Pro, Focal, Helix, and Astell & Kern, was based on current-day recommendations, reflecting the remarkable advancements in DSPs and amplifiers.

The BC Forged wheels struck a chord due to their value and stylish options, while Air Lift Performance’s rich history and proven products made them the go-to choice for air suspension.

In Memory of Ariana: The Rose Gold Connection

The rose gold theme running through the build isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s a heartfelt tribute to David’s daughter, Ariana, whose favorite color is rose gold. It’s a touching reminder of the personal stories that often drive these projects.

The Takeaway: Dare to Be Different

David’s story reminds us that anything is possible with the right mindset, passion, and a sprinkle of cash. His advice? “Dare to be different, defy convention, and surround yourself with those who celebrate your success.”

Building cool stuff isn’t just about the end result; it’s about the journey, the self-discovery, and the sheer joy of creating something unique.
