A car coat made from the very same materials that upholster an electric SUV. Yes, really. Volvo Cars is celebrating 70 years in the U.S. by teaming up with designer Sergio Hudson on a limited-edition collection that blends Scandinavian minimalism with a burst of fashion’s audacity.

You might wonder, why would a car company branch into fashion? Or how could the fabrics inside an SUV become couture pieces? Those questions open a surprisingly interesting look at how materials, identity, and ambition can intertwine.

When Volvo announced this collaboration, they cited a shared geography as much as a shared vision. Hudson hails from Ridgeway, South Carolina. Volvo’s EX90 SUV is built in a plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina (near Charleston).

That connection is intentional, grounded in shared roots. The collection highlights two pieces crafted with precision: a tailored wool blend car coat priced at US$1,895 and a Nordico in Dawn belt priced at US$225. Both are made to order and designed using the same materials found inside the Volvo EX90’s cabin.

The same responsibly sourced wool that covers the seats of the EX90 has been tailored into the car coat. Hudson borrowed Volvo’s “Scandinavian living room” philosophy, which values simplicity, function, and comfort, then gave it his signature edge with structure, confidence, and expressive proportions.

The coat drops to mid-thigh for warmth while keeping legs free to work the pedals, staying true to its purpose as a driving coat. The belt pays tribute to Volvo’s most famous safety innovation, the three-point seat belt.

Crafted from Nordico, a bio-attributed PVC backed with 100 percent recycled polyester, the accessory features a platinum-inspired buckle embossed with both brand logos, blending craftsmanship with conscience.

Hudson didn’t just phone in this design. He visited the Charleston plant, immersed himself in the EX90’s production process, and used that first-hand insight to choose materials, hues, and finishing touches.

“Visiting the Charleston Plant, I was struck by the intentionality behind every design choice. I witnessed an attention to detail I apply during my own design process,” Hudson said, adding “the EX90 in particular is warm, sophisticated and mindfully crafted. I wanted to capture that same feeling of elevated comfort and conscious luxury.”

The connection between car design and couture runs even deeper. The collaboration features a capsule of three complete looks that pair the coat and belt with pieces already in Hudson’s collection.

One look leans into relaxed luxury with lightweight denim and tailored trousers. Another sharpens the aesthetic through structured suiting in houndstooth and vests. The third brings evening confidence with a long-sleeve mini dress accented by sequins.

And together, these looks prove the collection was created for real wear, crafted to endure and integrate seamlessly into daily life.

Volvo’s head of communications, Kelly Mason, said, “This collaboration is a celebration of luxurious style, purpose and our presence in the Charleston area. By joining forces with Sergio Hudson, we’re merging automotive design with a modern vision of fashion in a collection that empowers you to feel more confident.”

Everything is limited. The coat and belt will be available to order starting October 20, 2025, exclusively online (U.S., Canada, U.K.). Made-to-order, crafted in the U.S. by Sergio Hudson Collections.

In recent years, carmakers have dipped their toes into fashion through capsule collections, special collaborations, and lifestyle tie-ins. Yet very few have taken the leap of turning a vehicle’s interior materials into something you can actually wear.

The Volvo and Sergio Hudson collaboration delivers that crossover with style, letting you experience design harmony inside your car and carry that same aesthetic wherever you go.
