It was already the best-selling EV in China– and now, it’s also the cutest. The Wuling Mini Cabrio is hands-down our favorite new toy!
The best-selling EV in the world is the Wuling Mini EV, produced by General Motors’ joint venture in China SAIC-GM-Wuling. It’s adorable. It’s tiny. It has a GameBoy edition. But now it also has a cabrio model in production, and it’s so cute that I just want to love it and squeeze it.
Wuling’s Mini EV is so popular that it became the best-selling EV in China in 2021, selling over 426,000 models. Apparently, Tesla sold only 321,000 EVs in China last year.
SAIC-GM-Wuling has managed to keep the Mini EV fresh by meeting the market’s wants. Plenty of Chinese buyers were customizing their Mini EVs, so the brand decided to respond to that with various special editions like the Mini EV Macaron and now the Mini EV Cabrio.
One joyous thing about the standard Mini EV is its price – its starting price is 32,800 yuan (under $5,000). But if you’re a buyer in China who wants to stand out with this two-seater convertible edition, then you’ll need to shell out between 100,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan (a little under $14,500 to about $29,000). But the people who do want this zippy little special edition can enter a lottery drawing for the first production run. And, if demand is strong enough, then SAIC-GM-Wuling says it would ramp up production of the Cabrio.
For our part, we hope they do. Just look at it!
