You’ve heard the noise. That EVs are stalling. That Americans are over it. That we’ve hit “peak electric.” But then you see the numbers. Real numbers, not headlines, and they say something else entirely.

BMW didn’t take a cautious approach with electric vehicles. The company developed a full lineup, brought it to market, and let consumers decide. And they responded, clearly and decisively. In the first quarter of 2025, BMW’s EV sales rose by 26.4% compared to the same period last year. That growth wasn’t driven by hype. It came from real decisions, based on value, performance, and practical appeal.

And that’s just the beginning.

BMW i4 Sales Jump 57% as Drivers Do the Math

Let’s start with the BMW i4. The midsize all-electric sedan that doesn’t look for headlines but keeps earning them anyway. In Q1 2025 alone, BMW sold 7,125 i4s, up 57% from Q1 2024. That kind of growth doesn’t come from incentives. It comes from drivers doing the math and realizing what they’re getting:

  • Up to 307 miles of EPA-estimated range
  • Up to 536 hp in the M50 variant
  • 0-60 in 3.7 seconds
  • And a car you can plug in at night and forget about

This conversation has nothing to do with politics. It’s a practical decision rooted in saving time, gaining convenience, and keeping more money in your pocket.

BMW EV Sales Hit 13.5K in Q1 2025

The i4 isn’t alone. BMW’s Q1 2025 EV Sales lineup includes the iX, i5, and i7. Together, they moved 13,538 battery electric vehicles in three months. That’s momentum.

The iX, BMW’s all-electric SUV, quietly pulled off a 23.1% gain, reaching 3,626 units in Q1. With 516 hp, a max range of 324 miles, and one of the most luxurious interiors in its class, the iX isn’t here to make noise. It’s here to replace gas. Quietly. Effectively.

Not every model experienced growth. The i5 declined by 15.2%, and the i7 was down 10.4%. But this doesn’t indicate failure. It reflects context. A high-priced luxury sedan like the i7 is not designed to move in large volumes. It serves as a technology platform, built to highlights advanced features and design. Many EV buyers are still getting comfortable with the idea that they can expect both premium comfort and long-distance range in the same package.

EV Sales Aren’t Driven by Mandates. They’re Driven by Value.

“We are pleased to report a strong result for Q1, and with that a great start to 2025,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO of BMW of North America. His statement reflects more than optimism. BMW sold over 87,000 vehicles in just three months, and nearly 14,000 of those were fully electric.

Mackensen added that the strength of BMW’s production network will continue to support the company’s business, while the product lineup remains a strong draw for American customers. This suggests that people are not being pressured into buying electric vehicles. They are making the decision on their own, because BMW provides real options that meet their expectations. And many of those vehicles are built right here in the United States.

MINI Sales Climb 9.5% in Q1 2025

MINI had its own win. Q1 2025 sales were up 9.5%, with 6,976 cars sold. Much of that growth came from the all-new Countryman and Cooper models. While MINI hasn’t released its updated BEV sales yet, the Countryman EV is expected to contribute significantly this year. And judging by the early traction, it’s coming fast.

Think EVs Don’t Add Up? Think Again.

Still think EVs cost too much? Then explain how the i4 M50 outperforms an M340i, and starts at under $70K. Charging takes too long? Fast chargers deliver 200 miles in 15 minutes. Range anxiety? Most Americans drive 37 miles a day. You could charge once a week and still have buffer.

The only real risk? Not realizing this sooner.

EV sales are growing. Not everywhere. Not with every brand. But with BMW, the numbers speak louder than the noise. The truth is more drivers are waking up to the benefits. EVs are quieter rides, have faster acceleration, lower cost of ownership, and vehicles that actually fit their lifestyle.

So, maybe it’s time to stop debating what EVs were. And start noticing what they are.

  1. In less than 2 years those 13k cars will be software-obsolete since BMW can’t figure out how to keep vehicle software current. Case in point, 2022 and 2023 i4 models are not receiving any software updates, OTA or manual from a dealership (dealerships which refuse to update the vehicles unless there are active faults showing)

    Buyer beware!
