Every Volvo is Hybrid or Electric for 2023

In a first for a mainstream brand, Volvo Cars announced that every new 2023 model car sold in the US will be either a hybrid or all-electric vehicle!

The Volvo XC40, V60 Cross Country, and XC90 models all get mild hybrid powertrains for 2023, with the “B” alphanumeric replacing the previous “T,” which once stood for “Turbocharged” in the internal combustion era, with B4, B5, and B6 replacing the outgoing T4, T5, and T6 models. Does the new, “B” stand for, “battery?”

Probably!

The company sees this move as an important step towards its stated goal of becoming a fully carbon-neutral carmaker by 2040— a goal that Volvo says is, “the biggest challenge we’ve ever faced.”

Volvo Cars’ US sales are— like just about everyone’s— down more than 20% year-over-year, but it’s not all bad news for the Swedish brand. Sales of the company’s electrified “Recharge” plug-in models were up 18.7% compared with the same time in 2021, accounting for 38.4% of the brand’s total sales. Their share of fully electric cars stands at 10%.
