Myth Busting: Electric Vehicles Are Not as Fun To Drive

electric are not fun to drive green super car
  • Electric cars may have gotten a bad rap because of early, staid models, but contemporary EVs are anything but boring.
  • Thanks to instant torque, regular EVs have fast top speeds and quick 0-60 acceleration times.
  • They also are becoming more unique in their body styling, removing the fear of EVs looking like boring boxes on the road.

There are still some doubters out there who try to insist that electric cars are not fun to drive. These cynics will say that EVs are slow or that they just can’t give you the insane level of performance that you could get from a gas-powered supercar.

Well, we’re here to prove them wrong.

Myth #1: EVs Are Boring To Drive

EVs can be an absolute blast behind the wheel, delivering an exhilarating driving experience that rivals their gasoline-powered counterparts.

For one, EVs have instant torque. Unlike internal-combustion vehicles, EVs don’t have to go through the time-consuming process of injecting fuel and igniting it with a spark. This means that, the moment you press on the accelerator in an EV, you’re greeted with a surge of power and seamless acceleration.

But even regular EVs, beyond the high-performance cars, can get pretty exciting with their surprising quickness. According to MotorTrend, even the Kia Niro EV can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds, while the Mini Cooper SE does it in 6.0 seconds. This instant acceleration comes despite the heavier weight of EVs, and it ensures that every drive has a little thrill.

Electric cars aren’t fun to drive? Pooey.

Myth #2: EVs Are Boring To Look At

Another fun aspect of driving a car you love is how it looks. If you want an enjoyable drive, you also want a car that looks zippy, or sporty, or simply unique enough to reflect your own personality. Years ago, people might have been nervous that EVs lacked individuality because of their shared platforms, but manufacturers have found ways to infuse a bit of distinctive flair into their different models.

Take the Kia EV6, for example. It carries an aggressive stance that you might not expect from a Kia, let alone an EV – but it boasts a driving experience that goes beyond the normal Kia experience that is reflected in that body style.

The world of electric trucks and SUVs is no exception. The new GMC Hummer EV and Mercedes EQS sedan and SUV are perfect examples of how manufacturers can capture the essence and identity of their respective brands while using electric platforms. The Hummer EV embodies the rugged spirit of its predecessors, while the EQS delivers the luxurious feel and ride quality associated with Mercedes-Benz.

Plus, you can’t say that electric supercars like the Pininfarina Battista or the Aspark Owl are dull to look at. It’s just scientifically impossible, so don’t even try.

Always Updating and Moving Forward

Before you dismiss electric vehicles as “not fun to drive,” maybe take one for a test drive. Experiencing the feel of an EV firsthand is the best way to change a skeptical mind. You’ll be amazed at the rapid acceleration, instant torque, and unique touches of each new EV that comes out.
