Electric boats are a game changer for both beginner and experienced boaters. They are cleaner, quieter, and more enjoyable to operate, but the flip side is that they also come with a hefty price tag. But that’s all about to change with the recent announcement of the Veer X13.
Compared to the prices we’re used to seeing for electric boats, the Veer X13 is a breath of fresh air. Electric boats like the Candela C-8, Navier N30, Arc One, and the R30 from Blue Innovations Group are all above $300,000. While we’ve seen some lower-cost models recently, like the X Shore 1 at $139,000 or the POL Lux at $135,000, they’re still out of reach for the average boater who just wants to enjoy a weekend fishing trip without the noise and pollution of a gas-powered boat.
Enter the Veer X13. The company hasn’t announced the pricing for the electric version yet, but the boat comes in two versions: a 9.9 hp outboard engine version starting at $11,995 and an electric version. Based on the cost of the ICE-powered version, we expect the electric version to be much more affordable than other electric boats on the market.
So how did Veer make an electric boat that’s so affordable? Well, they simply gave us less boat. The Veer X13 is a 13-foot, two-seater boat meant for a more stripped down, minimalist day out on the water. It’s also not made from expensive materials like hand-laid carbon fiber or fancy-formed aluminum. Instead, it’s made from rotomolded polyethylene, which is the same material used to make kayaks. This is a cost-effective way to produce large and hollow plastic parts like boat hulls.
But the Veer X13 isn’t just a glorified kayak. It comes with a galvanized trailer as part of the price, making it easy for new boaters to get started right away. It also uses the newly unveiled Mercury Avator 7.5e electric outboard motor, which is a 750 W continuous-rated motor and a peak power rating of 1,000 W. The motor uses 1 kWh battery packs that are easy to swap out, and a single 48 V battery is good for 45 minutes of flat-out motoring or longer at reduced speeds.
All in all, the Veer X13 could be a game-changer for boaters who want to enjoy the benefits of an electric boat without breaking the bank.
