Troy Lee Designs Goes Hard on E-bike Helmets

Troy Lee Designs has just released the Flowline and Flowline SE, their first helmets officially certified for eMTB riding.

The half-shell helmets were created to cover a larger part of the head, protecting riders against the higher potential impact speeds that are associated with e-bike riding. Both helmets feature the full-wrap in-mold construction and conform to the NTA 8776 standard, a new Dutch safety requirement that surpasses those for CPSC/USA or EN 1078 certification, specifically created for speed pedelec riders.

The Flowline and Flowline SE helmets come with the MIPS B-Series liner, designed to protect riders in cases of rotational impact. While the regular Flowline uses a single-density EPS, the Flowline SE comes with a dual-density EPS that deals with low and high-speed impacts. The latter also features a FIDLOCK buckle with a magnetic closure at the chin strap. Although the colorways options vary between them, these differences are the most significant between the two helmets.

Both eMTB helmets feature adjustable straps, a 360° retention system with three-way rear height adjustment, and 14 vents for temperature regulation. The Flowline SE helmet has a bonus anti-microbial quick dry premium liner.

According to the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings, Troy Lee’s Flowline ranked #29, with a 5-star rating and a score of 10.79, beating some far more expensive competitors like the Fox Speedframe Pro MIPS and Troy Lee’s own A3 MIPS.

Surprisingly, the more expensive Flowline SE has a worse ranking (#77) compared to the Flowline, despite its dual-density EPS. However, it still received a 5-star rating. Both the Flowline and Flowline SE are available in three sizes, ranging from 53 cm to 63 cm head circumference.
