With a partnership focused on expanding EV charging stations across the country, these two leaders are offering what could finally make EV adoption more practical for everyone.
IONNA and Sheetz Team Up to Simplify EV Charging
IONNA, a collaboration of eight global automakers, including BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis, and Toyota, has teamed up with Sheetz, the iconic convenience chain, to make EV charging as easy as refueling. Together, they’re bringing charging stations to convenient locations packed with amenities drivers love.
“Every decision is made with the driver’s experience in mind. That level of customer centricity is built into the DNA of our business and it’s a quality we recognize in Sheetz, making them the right choice for our first collaboration,” said Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA.
By the end of December 2024, IONNA will have established “Rechargeries” at three Sheetz locations in Springfield and Willoughby, Ohio, and Scranton, Pennsylvania. The companies have an ambitious goal of opening 50 Rechargeries by 2026 and eventually scaling further.

Rechargeries Combine Speed Comfort and Convenience
These charging stations are anything but basic. The Rechargeries will feature high-power DC fast chargers for quicker EV charging, paired with Sheetz amenities like clean restrooms, Wi-Fi, snacks, and their famous made-to-order menu, all under red canopies for weather protection.
While home charging is often cheaper, public chargers like these are essential for EV owners without home access, offering convenience and efficiency when drivers need it most.
Trevor Walter, Executive Vice President of Petroleum Supply Management at Sheetz, explained it best, “Our mission at Sheetz is to put the Sheetz as we know it today, out of business. We do this through constantly evolving our business and introducing forward-thinking solutions. As the electric vehicle market expands, enhancing our charging infrastructure exemplifies this commitment.”

More EV Chargers Needed for Full Electrification
Public charging networks are essential. The U.S. currently has 215,109 public and private charging ports and 73,691 stations, according to data collected by the US Department of Energy, but experts say much more will be required for full electrification.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that by 2030, there will be 33 million EVs on the road, requiring 28 million EV charging ports to support them, most of which will likely be home chargers for single-family households.
IONNA’s plan to install 30,000 ultra-fast chargers by 2030 is a strong step in the right direction.
The real challenge lies in balancing convenience with availability. Drivers want fast, reliable access to chargers, and nobody wants to linger for hours at a station with zero amenities.

EV Growth Faces Uncertainty Amid Trump’s Plans to Roll Back Biden Policies
The Biden-Harris administration has doubled down on EV adoption to combat climate change and reduce emissions. Policies favoring zero-emissions vehicles have spurred the development of public charging networks, yet significant growth is still needed.
Currently, about 80% of EV charging occurs at home or work, according to the International Energy Agency, leaving the remaining 20% dependent on public stations. For these users, access to reliable and fast charging is crucial. Advancements in fast-charging technology are expected to play an important role.
As Tom Bowen, President of Qmerit Solutions, stated, “We also think it’s critical that the IONNA network and all of these other opportunities continue to expand. From our perspective, the majority of charging will still take place at home. We think that’s the best experience. Over 80% of drivers will still be looking for a residential experience. These networks are critical for the volume of multifamily [residents], which don’t necessarily have the same access to residential charging.”
The political environment is transitioning, with President-elect Donald Trump planning to reverse pro-EV policies, including ending the Biden administration’s goal for EVs to make up half of all vehicle sales by 2030.
These potential policy reversals could slow the expansion of public charging infrastructure and hinder the progress made in EV adoption.
