FLO, a leading North American EV charging network operator, conducted a survey revealing EV charging behaviors and preferences. This survey provides valuable insights, highlighting the vital role of infrastructure in shaping EV drivers’ experiences.

The survey, drawing responses from nearly 40,000 EV drivers across the United States and Canada, reveals compelling trends in EV charging behavior. Among the key findings, the survey highlights the indispensable role of DC fast (Level 3) chargers for extended trips. A staggering 60% of respondents rely on DC fast chargers for extended or multi-city journeys, spotlighting the necessity of fast, efficient charging solutions for smooth travel experiences.

Louis Tremblay, President and CEO of FLO, stresses the significance of these findings, stating, “FLO’s survey demonstrates the need for more robust charging solutions across North America, enabling drivers to plug in wherever they are—at work, home, or on the go.”

Contrary to common perception, charging time is not idle time for EV drivers. According to the survey, a significant portion of EV drivers actively engage with on-site amenities while their vehicles are charging at fast chargers. Approximately 51% of respondents reported participating in various activities, with 60% opting to eat or buy refreshments and 19% utilizing nearby retail stores for shopping. This data reinforces the importance of understanding EV charging behavior and integrating charging stations into locations with amenities, enhancing the overall charging experience for EV drivers.

Additionally, the survey shows the urgent need for dependable public charging stations. Since 29% of respondents don’t have a charging point at home, the demand for accessible public charging options is clear. This emphasizes the importance of expanding and improving public charging networks to support the increasing number of EV drivers.

In addressing the diverse charging needs of EV drivers, the survey highlights the necessity of a comprehensive network that offers both quick top-ups and longer-stay charging solutions. The data reveals a varied use of charging station types, with 35% primarily utilizing Level 2 stations, 27% relying on DC fast charging stations, and 31% utilizing a mix of both. This diversity emphasizes the importance of flexibility and accessibility in EV charging infrastructure.
