You’ve waited in line at a broken charger. We all have.

You pull up with 15% left, coffee in hand, only to find the port offline. Or worse, ICE’d by someone “just running in for a second.” That frustration? Hyundai’s eliminating it, or at least making it easier to avoid.

Starting now, U.S. Hyundai EV owners can use Tesla Superchargers. That’s right. The gold standard of EV fast charging, 20,000 stations strong, is officially open for Kona Electric, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and even the old Ioniq hatchback. No new car required. No paid upgrade. Just a complimentary NACS adapter, if you bought your Hyundai EV on or before January 31, 2025.

“This move improves the public charging experience by giving our customers even more choice,” said Olabisi Boyle, Senior VP of Product Planning and Mobility Strategy for Hyundai Motor North America. “It’s a vital part of our commitment to ease America’s transition to electric vehicle ownership.”

Sounds like a press release. But here’s what it actually means: you’ve now doubled your fast-charging options. No waiting. No guessing. Just plug into a Tesla Supercharger and go.

CCS vs. NACS: Why This Matters

Let’s break down the tech, quick and clean.

Most Hyundai EVs in the U.S. run on the CCS standard (Combined Charging System). Until now, that locked owners out of Tesla’s Supercharger network. Tesla, meanwhile, uses NACS, the North American Charging Standard. Same high voltage. Different plug.

This new Hyundai-designed adapter bridges that gap. And it’s not some universal third-party dongle. It’s purpose-built for Hyundai EVs, specifically tuned for high-voltage platforms like the e-GMP architecture powering the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.

Why does that matter? Because charging reliability depends on more than just plug shape. The vehicle and charger need to speak the same language. This adapter makes sure they do. There’s no guesswork, no misfires. Just plug in, and it works. You’re speaking fluent Tesla.

Who Gets It, and How

You qualify for a free adapter if:

  • You own or lease a Kona Electric, Ioniq Electric, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, or the upcoming 2025 Ioniq 5 N.
  • You bought it on or before January 31, 2025.
  • You have an active MyHyundai.com account.
  • You’ve opted into email communications.

If that’s you? Check your inbox starting April 7. Hyundai will send you an email to confirm your shipping address. Say yes, verify your info, and they’ll ship the adapter to your door. No cost. No strings. But don’t sleep on it because you’ve got 60 days to respond.

And heads-up: newer models with native NACS ports (like the refreshed 2025 Ioniq 5 and upcoming Ioniq 9) won’t need this adapter. But also won’t get one. You don’t need what’s already built in.

So What’s the Catch?

Honestly? Not much.

You’ll still need to check availability. Tesla Superchargers prioritize Tesla vehicles, and some locations may get crowded. Plus, while Hyundai is working to integrate seamless payment options, there may still be a learning curve with apps and accounts if you’re new to the Tesla ecosystem.

That said, this has nothing to do with being in some exclusive club. It’s about having options. Real freedom. Plain common sense.

Compare it to waiting in line behind six Ubers at a broken charging stall in the back of a grocery store lot. The Tesla alternative? Well-lit. Reliable. Fast.

And fast means real fast. The Ioniq 5 charges from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes under ideal conditions. That’s 200+ miles while you grab a coffee.

Hyundai’s Bigger Strategy

This adapter program fits into a much larger play. Hyundai isn’t waiting for permission. They’re meeting real drivers, with real needs, right now.

  • The new IONNA joint-venture is bringing even more high-speed chargers nationwide.
  • Hyundai EVs continue to deliver best-in-class charging speeds, thanks to 800V architecture.
  • U.S. production is ramping up in Savannah, GA, lowering costs and improving availability.
  • And through Hyundai Home, customers can get discounted home chargers, or even get one installed for free.

This has nothing to do with climate. This is control. No more gas prices. No more oil changes. No smog checks. No overpriced maintenance.

The Bottom Line

If you own a Hyundai EV and haven’t updated your MyHyundai account or opted into email communications, do it now. Don’t miss your window.

Because this adapter? It’s not just a plug. It’s access. It’s peace of mind on road trips. It’s the difference between “I hope it works” and “I know it will.”

And yeah, you get it for free.
