How Nova Scotia is Charging Ahead with EV Infrastructure

How Nova Scotia is Charging Ahead with EV Infrastructure
  • Canada is investing over $3 million to install 660 Level 2 EV chargers in Nova Scotia by December 2024.
  • Over $34 billion has been invested since 2020 to switch to electric vehicle production and build a strong battery supply chain in Canada.
  • The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program has deployed over 41,000 EV chargers nationwide.

With cheaper refueling and lower maintenance costs, EVs are becoming the smart choice for families across Canada and the U.S. In a move to reduce pollution, saving money, and creating a cleaner, healthier future, the Government of Canada has announced the installation of 660 new EV chargers in Nova Scotia, making EV charging stations more accessible than ever.

Canada to Install 660 EV Chargers by 2024 for Greener Living

The recent announcement by Member of Parliament Kody Blois, on behalf of Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, highlights significant federal investments in two organizations. These investments will install 660 Level 2 EV chargers across the province by December 2024.

Polycorp Group of Companies will receive $3,054,725 to install 634 chargers at nine multi-unit residential buildings, according to Natural Resources Canada. This initiative will significantly benefit residents, making EV charging as convenient as plugging in your phone.

Peter Polley, owner of Polycorp, shared, “At Polycorp, we’re committed to providing homes that leave a much smaller carbon footprint than traditional buildings. This investment by the Government of Canada will help us deliver a record number of EV chargers to our residents, resulting in homes that are better for the health of our planet.”

Additionally, 292 Main Street Developments Limited will receive $95,596 to install 26 chargers. This project includes an innovative EV car-sharing program at the Latitude 45 Suites, promoting net-zero mobility benefits and reducing transportation costs.

Kevin Gildart, President of 292 Main Street Developments, stated, “292 Main Street Developments is proud to share the net-zero vision with NRCan and the Town of Wolfville. Our initiatives will not only support those currently driving EVs but will also expose the benefits of EVs and net-zero driving experience.”

Empowering Communities and Creating Jobs

The deployment of these EV charging stations is part of a broader federal strategy to support a coast-to-coast network of EV chargers, known as the Canada and U.S. Alternative Fuel Corridor. This initiative is essential not only for urban centers but also for smaller communities, ensuring that all Canadians can confidently make the switch to electric vehicles.

“Today’s investment is an important one for ensuring access to reliable EV charging infrastructure outside of major urban centers,” said Kody Blois. “I know the investment will help contribute to the further uptake of zero-emission vehicles in communities across East Hants.”

The federal government’s commitment to EV infrastructure extends beyond Nova Scotia. Since 2020, more than $34 billion has been invested to switch to producing electric vehicles and create a strong battery supply chain. This includes the development of a Battery Innovation Roadmap, which scales up a sustainable domestic battery innovation ecosystem. These investments are fostering environmental sustainability and are also creating thousands of good manufacturing jobs across the country.

A Brighter, Greener Future

As we race towards a net-zero future, the government’s efforts to make EV chargers widely available are pivotal. The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program alone has helped deploy over 41,000 EV chargers in Canada. The recent request for proposals under this program will further support the deployment of chargers in public places, workplaces, and multi-unit residential buildings.

The transition to 100-percent new electric vehicle sales by 2035 is expected to reduce over 360 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, avoiding almost $100 billion in global damages. These efforts are complemented by incentive programs like the federal iZEV Program, which has provided over 300,000 incentives to help Canadians switch to EVs.
