BMW and Mercedes-Benz Start EV Charging Network in China

Announcing a groundbreaking partnership for EV charging in China, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. and Mercedes-Benz Group China Ltd. have disclosed their commitment to establish a 50:50 joint venture in China. This new enterprise is poised to operate a high-power EV charging network.

Preparations are underway by BMW and Mercedes for the first stations; The companies expect to commence operations in 2024. The companies will locate the stations in primary NEV regions. The ambitious target is to have at least 1,000 stations installed nationwide, boasting around 7,000 charging piles by the end of 2026. This bold joint venture between the BMW Group and Mercedes-Benz Group aims to offer customers a seamless digital experience. This includes exclusive features such as plug & charge functionality, a labor-saving and convenient feature that begins charging when the cable is connected.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz will deliver unique and tailor-made charging solutions for EV charging in China. Their deep understanding of the Chinese New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market will provide fast, convenient, and reliable services.

The move adopts state-of-the-art charging technologies, promising efficient and high-speed power-ups for electric vehicles. The companies scheduled the first stations to open in 2024 in top New Energy Vehicle (NEV) regions, marking the commencement of this landmark project. The deployment will continue, however, with plans to install more stations nationwide.

The premium charging network will be accessible to the public. However, the BMW Group and Mercedes-Benz Group customers anticipate gaining access to a host of exclusive features. These may include plug-and-charge capabilities for effortless charging and the convenience of online reservations for a smooth and streamlined digital experience. The joint venture for EV charging in China is also committed to sustainability. Where conditions permit, the venture plans to procure electricity derived from renewable sources.
