From tearing up the track to navigating remote trails, Patrick Xie of Fremont, California, has a passion for pushing vehicles to their limits. Known for his expertise in both high-performance and off-road builds, Patrick recently took on a new challenge that blends his love for technology, performance, and adventure – the Tesla Cybertruck.
Recognizing the untapped potential of electric trucks in the off-roading community, Patrick built a Cybertruck that proves electric vehicles (EVs) can handle tough, rugged trails.
“This build was about showing people that the Cybertruck isn’t just a futuristic design; it’s something that can tackle serious overlanding challenges just like any traditional truck,” Patrick explained.
With experience spanning track builds and widebody stance setups, he has a long history of customizing vehicles for various purposes. This time, he turned his expertise toward building a fully outfitted, adventure-ready electric truck.

Unpacking the Tesla Cybertruck Build
Patrick’s Cybertruck is packed with carefully chosen upgrades designed to handle extreme conditions. With 600 horsepower, the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck AWD is built to perform just as well on rough trails as it does on smooth highways.
“The intention from the start was to create an overlanding build,” Patrick stated. “It’s about combining electric technology with the ruggedness needed for off-roading.”
Key customizations include the Urander Bed Rack Kit, designed specifically for the Cybertruck’s unique shape. This rack system provides the backbone for a rooftop tent, awning, and even a Yakima bike mount, perfect for a fully immersive outdoor experience.
“My favorite aspect has to be the roof rack system,” Patrick said. “It’s designed to mount rooftop tents and awnings, similar to how we used to build for gas-powered trucks.”
Other Cybertruck accessories include a front light bar, which improves visibility during nighttime rides, and the Starlink Mini setup, offering reliable connectivity in remote areas. Each component is chosen to withstand the challenges of off-road adventures, ensuring that the Cybertruck can go where traditional EVs might hesitate.

Bridging the Gap Between Gas and Electric
Before getting into electric trucks, Patrick was already familiar with off-roading. His reliable Tacoma had been his go-to for countless overland adventures, packed with gear and ready for tough terrain. Switching to the electric Cybertruck was about showing what an EV is truly capable of.
“The future is electric,” Patrick mentioned. “When the Cybertruck arrived, it felt like the perfect opportunity to combine my love for adventure and innovation.”
Reflecting on his journey, Patrick shared how he approached the challenges of working with the new platform. “One of the biggest challenges was adapting the Cybertruck to handle the rigors of overlanding. It required a lot of creativity and testing to get the flat rack design just right,” he said.
By leveraging his years of off-roading experience, he customized the rack to hold up against the elements while maintaining the Cybertruck’s aesthetic.

Inspiration from a Legacy of Builds
Patrick’s builds are deeply rooted in his personal journey within the automotive community. His two dedicated track builds are designed purely for performance, while his widebody stance car reflects his artistic side.
The Cybertruck overlanding setup, however, is the culmination of years spent refining his approach to off-road customization. “Customizing has always been about personal expression for me,” Patrick explained. “Whether it’s for function, like my overlanding rigs, or form, like my stance build, customization allows me to push the boundaries.”
The Cybertruck’s versatility appealed to his sense of adventure, inspiring a build that bridges traditional off-roading with the latest in electric vehicle technology. “A lot of the inspiration came from years of overlanding with gas-powered trucks and SUVs,” Patrick noted. His goal was to prove that electric trucks could conquer the same rugged landscapes as any conventional vehicle.

Cybertruck Wins Best Truck at Electrify Showoff, Inspires New Vision for EV Off-Roading
The Cybertruck build made its debut at the Electrify Showoff Driven by Yokohama Tire in San Francisco, where it earned the prestigious Best Truck award. The build’s combination of innovative engineering and rugged functionality resonated with both the judges and attendees.
“I’m passionate about helping others see the potential of electric vehicles beyond just commuting,” Patrick stated. This build showcases what’s possible and a call to action for the off-road community to rethink what EVs can achieve.
Pushing EVs into the Future of Adventure
For Patrick, this Cybertruck represents a vision of the future of adventure. “The move from traditional trucks to the Cybertruck has been exciting. It’s a testament to how much automotive technology has evolved,” he shared.
Patrick’s journey with the Cybertruck is just getting started. Whether he’s hitting rocky trails or camping under the stars, he’s pushing the limits of what electric trucks can do. Along the way, he’s showing others that EVs are fully equipped for adventure.
