When Luis Gomez and Delmy Romero decided to customize their 2022 Tesla Model Y, they had a unique vision. They wanted to create a vehicle that combined the classic elegance of a lowrider with the advanced technology of an electric vehicle (EV). Their journey began in San Jacinto, CA, where their passion for cars was nurtured from childhood. Luis reminisces, “I got into the car scene since I was born; family had all types of vehicles around the house always. Mostly imports and Lowriders.” This passion, combined with Delmy’s love for classic cars, set the stage for an extraordinary, award-winning build.

Luis and Delmy purchased their Tesla at the San Diego Tesla receiving location. The decision to modify it was driven by Delmy’s initial desire for a 1964 Chevy Impala ragtop convertible. However, practicality led them to the Tesla Model Y, with its promise of EV efficiency for long commutes and road trips. “We decided to modify this vehicle because truly my girlfriend wanted a ’64 Chevy Impala ragtop convertible. With her long commute and we love driving everywhere, it would not be feasible for us to do that to a classic,” Luis explains.
The couple’s love for customization and playful competition drove them to push their Tesla Model Y to its limits. Their approach was hands-on, with contributions from talented professionals and reputable aftermarket part brands in the industry. They worked with Hoppos’ Alex and Iceboxx Customs’ Lorenzo for the air suspension, while Carlos at CLJ Customs handled the audio, video fabrication, fiberglass, and customization, including the installation of an incredibly technical Focal Utopia Active setup.
This impressive audio system in the Model Y includes 16 speakers and 2 subwoofers, ensuring a premium sound experience. The upholstery was entrusted to Chuy’s Auto Upholstery, and the unique lighting system was installed by Teslux Innovations.
The result? A stunning vehicle featuring a 17-stage paint job with seven different House of Kolor candies, lowrider graphics, and a custom clear hood pocket window. The Forgiato wheels are wrapped in Vogue tires with a distinctive white wall and yellow signature pinstripe, affectionately known as Mayo and Mustard. The Model Y’s interior is equally impressive, featuring full customization with Alcantara, purple leather, and pink stitching.
Luis and Delmy’s Tesla Model Y is a showpiece and testament to their creativity and dedication. The vehicle’s performance specs are equally impressive, with 527 horsepower (393 kilowatts) and 487 lb-ft (660 Nm) of torque. The car’s powertrain includes a 15.5V lithium battery replacing the traditional 12V lead-acid, which ensures optimal efficiency and power delivery.

Participating in events like Electrify Showoff Driven by Yokohama Tire, the duo has already earned numerous awards, including Best Frunk and Best Paint presented by Meguiar’s. Their car has also won Best of Show, presented by Yokohama Tire. They attend a variety of shows, from lowrider events to EV festivals, consistently taking home top honors.
Luis and Delmy’s story is about partnership, passion, and perseverance. Their Tesla Model Y has become a symbol of their journey together, blending past influences with future aspirations. Delmy’s influence is evident throughout the build. “My girlfriend was the biggest influence and inspiration in this build because we did it together, and we both thought long and hard on everything that goes on the car,” Luis shares.
The challenges they faced, particularly the tight timelines for show preparations, were met with determination and support from their community. “We have a lot of wonderful people that helped us get there,” Luis acknowledges. This collaborative effort is a cornerstone of their success.
