Milestone Achieved: Canadians Recycle 40 Million Kg of Batteries

Celebrating a Green Milestone Canadians Recycle 40 Million Kilograms of Batteries
  • Over 40 million kg of used batteries have been recycled by Call2Recycle Canada Inc. since 1997, preventing environmental harm.
  • Landfills contribute 83% of Canada’s waste emissions. Battery recycling helps reduce these emissions and supports waste reduction goals.
  • Canadians can support battery recycling by collecting, protecting, and dropping off batteries at over 10,000 Call2Recycle collection sites across the country. It prevents environmental damage and fire risks while promoting material reuse.

Canadians, it’s time to give yourselves a pat on the back! Call2Recycle Canada Inc., the nation’s leading battery collection and recycling program, has reached a remarkable milestone in battery recycling. Over the past 25 years, an astounding 40 million kilograms of used batteries have been diverted from landfills and responsibly recycled. That’s equivalent to the weight of 3,300 school buses!

Collaboration for a Sustainable Economy

This exceptional accomplishment is the outcome of extensive collaborations across various sectors in Canada, aiming to build a sustainable economy while reducing solid waste and carbon emissions. As our reliance on battery-powered devices continues to grow – from laptops to household appliances, eBikes, and Electric Vehicles (EVs) – the responsible management of batteries at their end-of-life becomes crucial. For over two decades, federal and provincial governments, industries, and partners from diverse business sectors have joined forces with Call2Recycle to provide an environmentally friendly solution.

The Environmental Impact

Discarding batteries in landfills can have detrimental effects on the environment and worsen Canada’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Landfills account for a significant portion (83%) of emissions from Canada’s solid waste sector. Recognizing waste prevention, reuse, and recycling as vital sources of potential GHG reductions, the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan emphasizes the significance of initiatives like Call2Recycle.

Call2Recycle: Leading the Charge

Since its inception in 1997, Call2Recycle has been at the forefront of efforts to reduce waste-related emissions. By working closely with battery manufacturers, retailers, provincial governments, and municipalities, Call2Recycle has built an efficient collection program and supported battery initiatives nationwide. With Canada’s focus on net-zero emissions strategies by 2050, Call2Recycle stands ready to embrace changes in the economy and increase battery recycling diversion rates in the years ahead.

Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada, expressed his appreciation, saying, “This remarkable milestone is the result of hard work, commitment, and collaboration from many stakeholders. As we look forward to our goals for the coming decades, we will continue innovating and expanding our recycling infrastructure to support Canada’s growing battery market, including the increased production of batteries for electric vehicles.”

The Power of Consumer Participation

To achieve further success, Call2Recycle needs the support of all Canadians. By properly recycling batteries, individuals can prevent fire risks and protect the environment from the harmful effects of battery components in landfills. Recycling 40 million kilograms of batteries has already prevented approximately 6,260,000 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq) emissions, according to EcoBatt.

How Can Canadians Contribute?

It’s simple! Every Canadian can make battery recycling a regular habit by following three easy steps: collect, protect, and drop off. With over 10,000 Call2Recycle collection sites across the country, there are convenient options available for safely disposing of batteries. To find the nearest drop-off point, visit

Call2Recycle Canada has achieved a significant milestone by recycling over 40 million kilograms of batteries. This accomplishment not only demonstrates the collective efforts of various stakeholders but also emphasizes the importance of responsible battery recycling in reducing waste and carbon emissions. Canadians can proudly contribute to this cause by making battery recycling a regular habit. Together, we can build a greener future and protect our environment for generations to come.
