Would you believe that in just a few years, you could buy an electric Volkswagen for around $21,500? That is exactly what Volkswagen is planning. And no, this is not some far-fetched concept or a PR stunt, it is happening.
At a recent works meeting in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer pulled back the curtain on the company’s ambitious roadmap for making electric vehicles (EVs) accessible to a much wider audience.
“A key step in this is making e-mobility attractive for everyone – that is our brand promise,” Schäfer stated. This means an entry-level Volkswagen EV priced at approximately €20,000 (or around $21,500 USD), slated for release in 2027.

Volkswagen Bringing Affordable Electric Cars
Volkswagen’s upcoming entry-level EV is part of a new small electric car family built on an upgraded version of the modular electric drive (MEB) platform. This includes the production version of the ID.2all, expected to hit dealerships in 2026 with a starting price below $27,000 USD.
But what does all this mean for the average driver? Simply put, a high-quality electric car at a price that does not make your wallet cry. Schäfer calls this “the Champions League of automotive engineering.” And with that, Volkswagen is setting up a competitive alternative to the growing number of affordable EVs.

Volkswagen Expands with Affordable Model and Wolfsburg Upgrades
This new entry-level EV will not just be a budget car slapped with a Volkswagen badge. According to Daniela Cavallo, Chairwoman of the Volkswagen General and Group Works Council, “The new all-electric entry-level model will be a Volkswagen in the genuine sense of the term.” That means quality, reliability, and design that aligns with Volkswagen’s long history of producing vehicles people love.
Wolfsburg, Volkswagen’s historic manufacturing hub, will remain at the center of these developments. The company is relocating Golf production to Mexico to make room for next-generation electric Golf and T-Roc models, both expected to be high-volume sellers. Volkswagen is also introducing new production processes to keep Wolfsburg competitive.

Volkswagen’s Three-Stage Plan for Global EV Success
Volkswagen has rolled out a three-stage plan to dominate the space:
- Catch Up: Strengthen competitiveness by cutting costs and expanding the model lineup.
- Attack: Release nine new electric models by 2027, including the ID.2all and the entry-level $21,500 EV.
- Achieve: Become the top global manufacturer of affordable, high-tech electric vehicles.
The shift toward the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) is a critical part of this vision. This new all-electric architecture will support fully digitalized, highly scalable vehicles for Volkswagen and its passenger car brands.

Volkswagen EV Sales Surge Affordable Model Coming
Volkswagen has sold over 1.35 million ID. EVs worldwide, including 500,000 ID.3 models. Last year, 383,100 all-electric Volkswagens were sold. The ID lineup is strengthening Volkswagen’s role in the EV market, and the upcoming affordable models could make an even bigger impact.
Why should you care? Because an electric car that does not drain your bank account means more people can switch to electric. And that is exactly what Volkswagen is counting on.
With a $21,500 electric model on the way, a revamped production strategy, and a strong commitment to Wolfsburg’s role in EV innovation, Volkswagen’s future in electric mobility looks affordable, practical, and genuinely exciting.
