The defect lies in the hood latch assembly, which might not detect if the hood is still unlatched after being opened. This oversight can lead to the hood unexpectedly opening while driving, obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the risk of a collision. Tesla acknowledges this risk in its safety report, stating, “Unknowingly driving a vehicle with an unlatched hood may result in the hood fully opening and obstructing the driver’s view, increasing the risk of a collision.”
