If you’ve got a Lucid Air Sapphire, you’ll never have to visit an amusement park again. The instant torque, knock-out horsepower, and head-spinning zero-to-60 times outperform any rollercoaster. Best of all, Sapphire production begins in September. Getting your hands on a Lucid Air Sapphire will cost at least $250,500.
The Specs That Set a New Standard
The Lucid Air Sapphire is technically the first ever super-sports sedan, and the specs will blow your mind. This gorgeous luxury EV has 1,234 horsepower and a range of 427 miles.
For comparison, the Kia EV6 GT has 576 horsepower and a range of 206 miles. The Tesla Model S Plaid has 1,020 horsepower and 348 miles of range. The Millenium Force giga-coaster at Cedar Point has 800 horsepower and a top speed of 93 MPH.
Even more impressive is the 0-60 speed. It takes 1.89 seconds to reach 60 MPH from a standstill. If you keep the pedal down, you’ll reach 100 MPH less than 2 seconds later (3.84 100-MPH time). The top speed is 205 MPH, and the Lucid Air Sapphire achieves the quarter-mile in all of 8.95 seconds. You can trust that your heart will be beating fast and your back will be plastered to your seat.
Lucid engineers achieve these impressive specifications by adding three electric motors to the Air Sapphire. Two of the motors sit atop the rear axle to deliver serious power, seriously. They are powered by a 118.0-kWh battery pack with a 900-volt architecture. The platform should charge at 300 kW at a DC fast charger. When fully charged, the Lucid Air Sapphire should have 427 miles of range.
Engineering for the Platform and Performance
Engineers had to figure out ways to reduce weight, so they added an aluminum roof and lowered the center of gravity. Performance is enhanced with a unique adaptive damper control software and torque vectoring control algorithm for traction control. The updated front and rear suspension geometry enhanced the steering response and the springs, bushings, and anti-roll bars provide safety.
The heavy platform and battery pack sit atop 20-inch wheels in the front and 21-inch wheels in the rear. The Bespoke Aero Sapphire wheels have removable carbon fiber aero wheel covers and Michelin designed innovative Pilot Sport 4S tires with a special compound just for the Lucid Air Sapphire.
The carbon-ceramic rotors are in a class by themselves. In the front, they measure 16.5 inches and have 10-piston calipers, while the rear rotors measure 15.4 inches and have four-piston calipers.
Driving Modes and Sub-Modes
Drivers can choose from four drive modes: Smooth, Swift, Sapphire, and Track. Each mode changes the suspension, steering, brakes, torque vectoring, peak power, and thermal controls. The Lucid Air has Smooth and Swift modes, which are fine for daily driving. The Sapphire mode gets the 1,234 horses running, and the Track mode tightens the tracking, steering, and suspension.
When drivers enter Track mode, they can choose from three more sub-modes: Dragstrip, Hot Lap, and Endurance. They do exactly what they say, while the computer manages the battery as drivers practice their race-qualifying skills. These settings are designed for driving on actual race tracks and drag strips.
Unassuming Interior Filled with Quiet Luxury
The luxurious EV comes with more than a screaming powertrain. On the inside, the Lucid Air Sapphire has dark-gray Alcantara seats with sapphire-blue stitching. Even though weight is at a premium, Lucid included heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats.
The unassuming interior also features a 34-inch floating Glass Cockpit with Lucid UX with over-the-air software updates, DreamDrive Pro with more than 30 features including LIDAR, and a 21-speaker Surreal Sound Pro with Dolby Atmos compatibility.
