Hyundai Smashes Sales Records in December 2023 and Wraps Up a Remarkable Year

In December 2023, Hyundai Motor America had a great month in car sales. They sold more cars than ever before in December, with a 4% increase compared to December 2022. This was the 17th month in a row that Hyundai sold more cars than the previous month. Some specific Hyundai models, like the IONIQ 5 all-electric crossover SUV, Santa Fe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and Palisade, also had their best-ever sales.

Hyundai December 2023 Record-Breaking Sales Performance

Hyundai  achieved a remarkable milestone in December 2023, reporting total sales of 75,164 units. This represents a 4% increase compared to December 2022 and stands as the highest December sales total in the company’s history. Notably, this marked the 17th consecutive month of Hyundai’s total sales growth.


Model-Specific Achievements

Hyundai’s success wasn’t limited to overall sales figures. The company set records for several models in December 2023, including the IONIQ 5, Santa Fe PHEV, Santa Fe HEV, Tucson, Tucson PHEV, and Palisade. These models saw extraordinary sales increases, with the Tucson PHEV, Santa Fe PHEV, and Palisade achieving all-time total sales monthly records.

CEO’s Perspective

Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, shared his thoughts on the outstanding year: “We finished 2023 with record-breaking total and retail sales and continued a trend initiated almost two years ago by consistently increasing monthly total sales in response to the surge in consumer demand for our products. 2023 was also our third consecutive year of record-breaking retail sales.”


December 2023 Q4 Sales & Annual Highlights

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Hyundai sold a total of 206,048 vehicles, setting a new Q4 total sales record and marking a 5% increase compared to Q4 2022. Notably, eco-friendly vehicle retail sales grew by an impressive 37% in Q4 compared to the same period in the previous year.

The year 2023 proved to be a historic one for Hyundai, with total annual sales reaching 801,195 vehicles, an 11% increase compared to 2022 and the highest total sales ever for the brand. Among the highlights, the Tucson achieved a new yearly sales record, surpassing 200,000 vehicles sold for the first time. Additionally, Hyundai set a new record for retail sales, with a 1% increase compared to 2022 and the third consecutive year of achieving a new retail sales record.

Corporate Recognition

Beyond the impressive sales figures, Hyundai’s vehicles received accolades and awards in December. The 2024 Elantra and Tucson were both awarded TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IONIQ 5 earned a spot on Car and Driver’s 10Best Trucks and SUVs list for the second year in a row, and the IONIQ 6 all-electric sedan was named The Drive’s Best EV of 2023. Additionally, the IONIQ 5 and Kona won 2024 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards.

Hyundai’s commitment to innovation was further showcased with the IONIQ 6, which was deemed the fastest-charging electric vehicle on the market in an Edmunds test. The Venue, IONIQ 5, and Palisade also received Consumer Guide 2024 Best Buy Awards for the second consecutive year, while the IONIQ 6 earned a spot on Fatherly’s ‘Top 10 Family Cars of the Year’ list for 2023.
