Hyundai IONIQ 5 N Has Its World Debut at Goodwood Festival

The IONIQ 5 N is Hyundai N’s first EV, and it’s meant to be a driver-focused high performance car meant for the road and the track.
This new EV includes performance features like N Pedal, which prioritizes sensitivity and cornering for a performance feel.
Additional features include a shifter and simulated exhaust sounds.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex witnessed a groundbreaking moment this past weekend as Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the highly anticipated IONIQ 5 N, the first high-performance, all-electric model from their renowned N brand. The world premiere of this cutting-edge vehicle marked a significant milestone in Hyundai’s commitment to electrification and its dedication to providing thrilling driving experiences on both the road and the track.

IONIQ 5 N: High-Performance Capabilities Electrified

Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N combines the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of the standard model with N’s motorsport-bred technologies. Leveraging the expertise gained from electrified “Rolling Labs,” such as the RM20e, RN22e, and N Vision 74, the 5 N maximizes high-performance capabilities and embodies N’s three performance pillars: “Corner Rascal,” “Racetrack Capability,” and “Everyday Sportscar.”

To achieve its “Corner Rascal” capabilities, the IONIQ 5 N features reinforced components and rally-inspired handling. Additional welding points and adhesives, together with enhanced subframes and integrated drive axles inspired by World Rally Championship technology, provide exceptional rigidity and torque distribution. The result is a more responsive and precise steering experience that instills confidence in the driver.

In addition, the IONIQ 5 N introduces innovative features like the N Pedal, an intelligent software function that enhances throttle sensitivity and turn-in behavior. With its regenerative braking system, the N Pedal prioritizes exhilarating cornering over energy efficiency, creating sharper corner entry. The N Drift Optimizer and N Torque Distribution offer advanced control and fully variable front and rear torque distribution, while the e-LSD at the rear axle optimizes cornering performance.

The IONIQ 5 N offers an unrivaled driving experience, both on and off the track, by combining state-of-the-art technology with a focus on driver feedback. The N e-shift and N Active Sound + functions provide a sense of control over power delivery and shift feeling while delivering engaging and exciting sensory experiences.

The N e-shift simulates the gearshifts of internal combustion engine N cars, providing precise and interactive driving dynamics that resemble traditional transmissions. Paired with N Active Sound +, the IONIQ 5 N generates futuristic EV sounds while also simulating engine and exhaust sounds, further enhancing the driving experience and ensuring that the passion and excitement of ICE vehicles are not lost in the transition to electric.

The interior of the IONIQ 5 N boasts N-branded elements, including the steering wheel, seats, door scuff panels, and metal pedals. Designed to optimize the driving experience, the N bucket seats provide excellent support during sharp cornering, while the N steering wheel features N buttons for quick access to drive modes. The center console offers optimized support and features, including knee pads, a sliding armrest, and convenient connectivity options.

Hyundai’s N brand showcased its full prowess at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023, with the 5 N taking center stage. The N brand’s dedicated stand not only featured the groundbreaking IONIQ 5 N but also highlighted other N line vehicles such as the i20 N WRC, N Vision 74, RN22e, and the world debut of the N brand’s “IONIQ 5 N Drift Spec” show car. Visitors to the stand were treated to exciting public activations, including race simulators and photo booths.

The standout event was the exclusive “N Moment” held during the iconic Goodwood hill climb. The N Moment showcased N brand’s motorsport models and rolling labs, culminating in the presentation of the IONIQ 5 N and the official premiere of the “Drift Spec.”
