  • Mon Power’s new EV charging station is powered by 28 solar panels and a battery, making it self-sufficient.
  • The use of renewable energy reduces the environmental impact of EV charging and lessens demand on the energy grid.
  • Customers can support renewable energy through Mon Power’s solar program without the upfront cost, and the company is building five solar facilities in its service territory.

It’s great news for the environment as FirstEnergy electric company, Mon Power, has installed a new electric vehicle charger powered by renewable energy. The charging station is located outside of the company’s headquarters building along I-79 in Fairmont, West Virginia.

What makes this charging station unique is that it’s powered by an array of 28 solar panels and a battery that stores the electricity generated by the micro solar site.

Mon Power’s Renewable Energy Charging Station Reduces Environmental Impact and Supports EV Growth

The charging station can supply Level Two charging to electric vehicles, which is capable of accommodating a vehicle for charging, delivering eight to 24 miles of range per hour of charging. By utilizing renewable energy, Mon Power is reducing the environmental impact of EV charging while lessening the demand on the energy grid.

Jim Myers, president of FirstEnergy’s West Virginia operations, stated, “As the demand for electricity grows with the increase in electrification of transportation, this micro-solar energy installation is a great way to support the environment while lessening the demand on the energy grid.

Mon Power is committed to the environment and improving reliability for customers by bolstering and diversifying the region’s energy mix.”

Self-Sufficient Solar EV Charging Station Offers Environmentally-Friendly Alternative to Grid-Powered Charging

This solar-powered EV charging station is a self-sufficient, standalone renewable power generator. This installation is a small cost to the company to maintain, but it will be a huge gain for the environment. Most other EV chargers in the state pull power from the electric grid. This energy source is a mix of nuclear, hydro, gas, coal, and other power resources.

Mon Power Leads the Way in Solar Adoption in West Virginia, Enabling Customers to Go Green Without High Costs

While this headquarters’ solar array is Mon Power’s first micro solar site, the company is also in the process of getting approval from the West Virginia Public Service Commission to build, own and operate five solar facilities in its service territory.

Through the solar program, customers of Mon Power and Potomac Edison in West Virginia can support renewable energy without the large upfront cost of building their own infrastructure. The company has already subscribed to several industrial and commercial customers along with hundreds of residential customers.

Harpers Ferry, a town in West Virginia, recently committed to a subscription equal to 100% of its streetlight and town hall energy usage. This shows that there is a growing interest in the use of renewable energy in the state.

With the success of Mon Power’s solar program, we can hope to see more companies and municipalities switch to renewable energy for a greener future.

Mon Power’s new solar-powered EV charging station is a game-changer in the world of electric vehicles. By utilizing renewable energy, Mon Power is leading the way for a greener future in West Virginia.

As Jim Myers said, “Mon Power is committed to the environment and improving reliability for customers by bolstering and diversifying the region’s energy mix.” It’s a small step towards a big goal, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Do you think more companies should follow Mon Power’s lead and switch to renewable energy? Why or why not?
