International Mother Earth Day: April 22, 2023

International Mother Earth Day

Mother Earth is sending us a message: It’s time for us to take action. Climate change, pollution, and human activities like deforestation and illegal wildlife trade are accelerating the destruction of our planet. The consequences are dire, from plastic-filled oceans to extreme weather events affecting millions of people. Even COVID-19 has been linked to the health of our ecosystem. On this International Mother Earth Day, we must take stock of what our species has done to our planet and how we can better care for her.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is underway, with messages of hope for how we can revive our damaged ecosystems if we work together. We can shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both the people and our planet. We have the potential to fight climate change in all sorts of ways.

The last UN Climate Change report tells us that we have multiple, effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change. One way that we can work to combat further pollution is through our continued move toward electric mobility. Whether it be EVs, e-bikes, e-scooters, or fully electrified fleets of delivery trucks, electrified transport takes us away from relying on fossil fuels and polluting our air.

If we allow ourselves to rethink how we can move around within our world, then we can also think about other ways to reduce our impact on the planet. We have the potential to use more sustainable agriculture practices and urge manufacturers to reduce their harmful waste.

But everyone needs to play a part. This International Mother Earth day, take time to think about how we all, as individuals and as a whole species, can thank our planet for all she has given us. Let’s join the global movement to restore our world. Every action counts, no matter how small. Let’s work towards a more sustainable future, where we can thrive alongside our planet.
