Hyundai Goes EV-only in Norway

If you live in Norway and you’re shopping for a Hyundai, you’d better be shopping electric. Hyundai no longer sells gas cars in the country!

As of January 1, 2023, Hyundai has officially stopped selling internal combustion-powered vehicles of any kind in the nation of Norway, marking the end of an era for the Korean car brand, and very likely the beginning of a new one as more global markets move away from fossil fuels.

Norway, of course, has been “leading the charge” for vehicle electrification, and is well ahead of the rest of the world in EV market share with nearly 90% of all new vehicles sold in that country shipping to customers with a plug.

“Plugin electric vehicles took 89.3% share of the auto market in Norway in November, down from 91.2% year on year,” writes Dr. Max Holland, of CleanTechnica, who analyzes global vehicle sales. “Full electrics (BEVs), however, grew their share YoY, from 73.8% to 81.6%. Plugin hybrids continued to tail off, dropping to 7.7% from 17.4% YoY. Overall auto volumes were 19,513 units, up almost 28% YoY. November’s overall best seller was the Tesla Model Y.”

As for Hyundai’s sales, the brand has fully confidence in the abilities of its upcoming products to draw in customers. “We have great faith in our model portfolio,” says Thomas Rosvold, managing director of Hyundai Motor Norway. “Now that we have launched the all-new IONIQ 6, the time has come to sell only all-electric cars in the Norwegian market. IONIQ 5 and KONA Electric have long since taken positions as some of the most popular cars in the market, and we are confident that our pure electric cars will bring us continued success into the future.”

This is the first market where Hyundai will sell EVs only, but they’re not only company to announce a similar. Volvo made a similar announcement last year, stating that it would shift to only BEV and PHEV sales in Norway sometime in 2023, with VW joining the group in 2024.
