MG: Electric Miata Rival Coming in April

Though long-gone from US shores, the MG name lives on in China, where the company is planning a new, electric roadster revival!

Set to be unveiled in its final form at the Guangzhou Motor Show next April, this all-new MG roadster will follow in the traditions of the old MGB and MG TF roadsters, delivering exactly the kind of two seat, open-top motoring experience that made British drop-tops of the 1960s and 70s lustworthy enough for Mazda to effectively copy them with the Miata.

Seriously, if you’ve never seen a first generation Lotus Elan that original MX-5 Miata was almost a direct copy. Just, you know, with Japanese reliability instead of Lucas electricals baked in for good effect.

Once it finally does arrive, MG UK Commercial Director Guy Pigounakis says the new convertible will, “be a game-changer in terms of perception of the brand,” (and) act as a “halo” model for the company, which is hoping to make something of a European comeback in the decade ahead.

Details are scarce, and specifications are more or less just guesses about 0-60 times and 300-500 mile range estimates, so we won’t bore you with all that. Suffice it to say, however, that if the car looks half as good as the concept that was teased a little while ago, none of that will matter.

Check out the concept gallery for yourself, below, and let us know if you agree with that sentiment in the comments.
