REI Launches New E-Bike Line

Outdoor retail giants REI have launched a new line of “Generation e” utility and cargo e-bikes that hope to take the fight to Rad.

The new, co-op branded e-bikes have a sub-2K price tag and a number of the same features that have made the RadRunner such a huge hit for Rad Power Bikes, making it clear that that’s the market (if not the bike) the Generation e1.1 and e1.2 is aiming for.

As an electric bike, REI’s co-op brand has a great reputation already, and the new Generation e-bikes won’t do anything but elevate that – especially with clever features like a memory foam saddle and a palette of fun colors. Beyond that, 20″ wheels and low-step frame add to the “one-size fits all” approach REI is taking here, while the 2.4 Schwalbe Super-Moto-X tires (with Double Defense GreenGuard puncture protection), Shimano 7-speed gears and shifters, Tektro disc brakes, and industry-standard Bafang Hub drive motors add to the feeling that this is a ebike you can have serviced just about anywhere.

REI seems to think so, anyway – and they’ve said as much. “This e-bike line was designed to help make it easier for people to hop on and go,” said Nate Nielsen, general manager for the company’s co-op cycle brand. “The frames and features give them approachability and versatility, whether you’re a new or seasoned rider, dressed in workout gear or jeans.”

You can check out a few of the electric bikes’ key specs, below, then let us know what you think of REI’s chances of success with their new e-bikes in the comments section at the bottom of the page. The new ebikes will be available for sale to REI members this summer, with deliveries slated to begin September 1st.
