Syndyt’s New Electric Balance Bikes

Syndyt (pronounced “Send it”, a great dirt jumping term) just announced their first three electric bikes, these in the form of motocross bikes. These differ from other, similar bikes like those from Stacyc, that instead of looking like bicycles, these look like full-on motocross bikes, with all the plastics and the moto-style seat, plus a triple-crown fork.

The mastermind behind this new company that also makes an incredible BMX race bike is BMX racing legend Toby Henderson. He also started Box Components, which manufactures drivetrain parts including chains and chainrings, etc. as well as other parts like handlebars, tires, rims, stems, brakes, etc. for BMX and mountain bikes. This is their first foray into electric.

I spoke with Toby on why he got into it and how. He was interested in Stacyc, but thought the bikes looked too bland and the battery life was too short. He had to educate himself on battery technology, and settled on bigger, longer-lasting, but still removable/swappable, batteries. His battery looks like a big, rectangular box than a cordless drill battery.

Syndyt bikes will come in 3 different sizes. There’s a 12”, a 16” and a 20” wheel size.

Syndyt SYR 120

The SYR 120 is a 12” bike that is geared toward the youngest of kids (3-5 years, suggested) who are just getting started. It features a 24V, 240Wh battery, a 250W motor that can make the bike go 5, 8 or 12 mph depending on which mode is selected. It has 12” alloy wheels, 12×2.125” tires, a rear mechanical disc brake, a triple-clamp fork, and MX-style foldable foot pegs.

Syndyt SYR 160

The SYR 160 is a 16” bike that is geared toward kids about 5-8-year-old kids who are just getting started or graduating up from the SYR 120. It’s not necessary to start with the smaller bike, this one will build confident riding skills by itself. The SYR 160 steps up to a 36V system with a 350W motor and a 360Wh battery. It can go 5, 10, and 16mph depending on which mode is selected. It has 16” alloy wheels, 16×2.125” tires, a rear mechanical disc brake, triple-clamp fork, and MX-style foldable foot pegs.

Syndyt SYR 200

The SYR 200, a 20-inch bicycle designed with 8-12-year-old kids in mind, could also serve as your child’s first bike. It features a 48V system powered by a 400W motor and equipped with a 360Wh battery. Depending on the selected mode, it can reach speeds of 10, 15, or 20mph. The bike comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, 20×2.125-inch tires, a triple-clamp fork, and foldable foot pegs in an MX-style. Notably, it upgrades to front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, a crucial safety feature for a heavier child riding a faster, heavier bike.

They’re all priced very reasonably, especially compared to other brands. And they look way cooler with the moto-style plastics and number plate that your kid can go nuts stickering up.

Toby let another cat out of the bag during our conversation. In the pipeline are 22”, 24”, and 26” models. He wants Syndyt bikes to have pedals and be pedal-assist, but there are considerations on bikes made for jumping for adults. Or adult-sized kids. Because, let’s face it, any of us who want to, well, send it on one of these is an adult-sized kid. Myself included!

The bikes are available for preorder, and will likely start shipping in April of 2024. They won’t get here in time for the holidays, but they will land in the spring.
