New Hummer, Same Old Army

The OG Hummer first got the spotlight during the first Gulf War. Now, thirty years on, the next generation H1 is ready to enlist!

The original Humvee was, ultimately, a military vehicle that saw widespread use in the Gulf War of the 1990s, and it grabbed the public’s imagination enough that production models were built for the public, dubbed the Hummer. As GMC continues to expand its electric vehicle offerings, it was only a matter of time before the Hummer got the EV treatment. Now, it’s back in the military ranks – the US Army has procured a production Hummer EV for testing.

According to documents, “The purpose of this requirement is to procure a new light to heavy duty Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) or series-hybrid electric wheeled vehicle, for Government analysis and demonstration.” The Army is currently looking for long-term options, seeking out scalable and adaptable capabilities to reduce the military’s reliance on fossil fuels.

“Leveraging GM’s advanced technology, this demonstration will prove to our U.S. Army customer what an all-electric supertruck can do and how the underlying technology can be leveraged for future defense needs, whether on an installation or in a tactical environment,” said the president of GM Defense Steve duMont.

This isn’t the first EV that the U.S. government has shown interest in. Government contracts have already gone to EV startup Canoo – to supply the Army with one vehicle for evaluation – and to GM Defense, a subsidiary of GM.

As for the go-anywhere, paramilitary vibe of the thing, GM seems to be leaning into the Hummer’s history with this “declassified” video highlighting new-age Hummer EV’s off-road prowess. Check it out, below.
