The genre-defining, ultra-luxe Mercedes Maybach S 580e gets a 510 HP electric powertrain for the first time ever.

Ever since since Wilhelm and Karl Maybach began building bespoke automobiles with Mercedes-Benz power in 1921, their goal was to deliver a “best of the best” driving experience. And, sure — they didn’t use those modern marketing buzz words, but quality isn’t just a catchphrase, and there are few places that’s more evident than behind the wheel (or, maybe in the back seat) of a Maybach.

“With our first plug-in hybrid model, we are combining the luxury experience typical of Maybach with emission-free local driving when in electric driving mode,” says Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes‑Maybach at Mercedes‑Benz Group AG. “The Mercedes‑Maybach S 580 e represents a pivotal step in the transformation of our heritage brand into an electric future. We will present our first fully electric model as early as 2023.”

The V12 Maybach cars are already incredibly quiet, but that amazing feeling of silence is made more amazing by the electric drive in the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e. On the move in tight, urban traffic, the big Maybach moves along with no emissions in practically complete silence — just the tire noise. With what the official release calls “usual Maybach competence,” the car’s e-specific features are subtly included, such as the hidden charging port on the left side of the car, blue accents in the headlights, and a the battery charge level indicator in the instrument panel (not shown).

Despite its relatively small 11 kWh battery, the Maybach offers about 60 miles of electric range and the ability to charge from nearly empty to full in under 30 minutes on a 60 kW DC charger (Chargeway level 5). Perfect for livery and limo drivers who could charge up while their clients hit their high-powered meetings in central London.

You can check out some of the big sedan’s key specifications, below, as well as a gallery of interior shots from the non-hybrid Maybach (which are, as mentioned, visually identical to the new hybrid), then let us know what you think of this big cruiser in the comments.
