The big change to electric vehicles has reached an important point, and it’s happening at the Port of Long Beach, USA. WattEV, a leading player in commercial-truck charging infrastructure, has electrified the nation with its grand opening of the largest electric truck charging depot in the country. This amazing facility is set to pave the way for a greener future in heavy-duty trucking.

With key industry, government, and environmental partners in attendance, the opening ceremony on July 24 was nothing short of spectacular. Salim Youssefzadeh, the CEO and co-founder of WattEV, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved for the rapid deployment of this impressive depot. He shared, “There was a tremendous amount of effort that went into getting this site operational within 14 months.”

From Last to First: WattEV’s Long Beach Depot Leads the Charge in Electric Truck Charging Facilities

Though the Long Beach depot was the last of the four WattEV depots to enter development, it takes the crown as the first one to open. “WattEV has been working on opening four depots in California for the past few years. The Long Beach depot was actually the last of the four to go under contract and into development, but it’s the first to open!” Youssefzadeh excitedly revealed.

Known simply as “WattEV,” this impressive facility sits right beside the Pier-A terminal at the Port of Long Beach (POLB). It will cater to electric heavy-duty trucks with routes connecting to various destinations across Southern California. Commissioner Patty Monahan of the California Energy Commission couldn’t contain her enthusiasm as she announced, “We are here to celebrate the accomplishment of WattEV’s energization of 13 chargers – the largest public heavy-duty charging depot in the nation.”

Powering the Future: WattEV Unveils Visionary Mega Charging Depot in Grand Opening Ceremony

The grand opening ceremony also witnessed the celebration of a groundbreaking public-private partnership. Liane Randolph, chair of the California Air Resources Board, expressed her pride in this remarkable collaboration. She stated, “This is a major milestone to that zero-emission future we are building.”

The depot boasts 13 dual-cord CCS 360KW chargers, capable of simultaneously charging 26 trucks with 5MW of power from Southern California Edison (SCE). Additionally, the visionary team at WattEV has plans to introduce megawatt charging, which will allow pass-through trucks to be fully charged in just 20 minutes, making electric trucking even more efficient.

WattEV’s mission is clear: to accelerate the transition to zero emissions in the U.S. trucking industry. Their cutting-edge technology and charging infrastructure aim to provide truckers and fleet operators with the lowest total cost of ownership. The goal? To have an impressive fleet of 12,000 heavy-duty electric trucks on California roads by the end of 2030, going above and beyond existing forecasts.

While the Long Beach depot is indeed the largest of its kind in the nation, it occupies just 1.5 acres. However, WattEV has more in store. Three additional sites are already under construction in San Bernardino, Gardena, and Bakersfield, California, expected to be completed by year-end. Plus, there are plans to expand beyond California and venture into states like Arizona and New Mexico, as well as explore opportunities on the East Coast.
