Electrify America Unveils Its First Application of Megawatt-Level Energy Storage to Enhance Customer Experience

Electrify America has unveiled the first application of megawatt-level battery storage to ensure customers can ALWAYS charge up!

California made news this summer, when an epic heatwave pushed the area’s energy grid to the breaking point. EV alarmists being what they are, however, rushed out a narrative about electric car owners not being able to charge their cars. Despite that fundamental misunderstanding of the technology involved, the FUD got airplay — but Electrify America, working entirely on its own, already had an answer for even the most hardened EV skeptics in the form of a battery energy storage system (BESS) for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at over 150 EA locations across the US, including more than 100 installations in California.

Because those batteries were charged previously, EA customers could connect to their plugs and charge up their cars — without interacting with the grid at all. And now, the BESS is bigger than ever, thanks to a massive new megawatt-level installation.

“The application of the megawatt-level energy storage is the latest example of how we are continuously innovating to tackle infrastructure challenges and meet charging needs today,” Said Jigar Shah, Head of Energy Services at Electrify America. “As we expand the use of such solutions to more of our charging stations and also to our medium-duty and heavy-duty electric fleet customers, we are positioned to enable continued transportation electrification even in the face of utility capacity constraints.”

Electrify America selected the Baker, California location for the first deployment of the megawatt-level energy storage system because of its remote location and utility capacity constraints. The integration of the roughly 1.5 MW / 3 MWh energy storage system with 66 kW of generation potential from the station’s solar canopy is Electrify America’s comprehensive, sustainable solution for adding additional power to the station, 24/7, rain or shine, even in a blackout.

“To put this into perspective, the energy storage system at Baker, when fully charged, could provide enough energy for an average household for over three months on the single charge,” Shah said.

The expansion at Baker also adds four new individual chargers, bringing the total to twelve. The new chargers feature the latest charger innovations and design. They have some of the fastest charging speeds available today at up to 350 kW, enabling newer EVs to add some 20 miles of range per minute of charging. Customers have the ability to pay through the Electrify America App or by credit card.

  1. Bravo for the Baker location, but still a far cry from the Tesla 30+ Supercharger next to it!!
