  • Cirba Solutions will expand its capacity through the new partnership
  • This will promote a more sustainable circular supply chain that includes battery recycling
  • With EVs projected to represent 52% of total U.S. car sales by 2030, this is a great step in the right direction

As electric and hybrid vehicles are projected to represent 52% of total U.S. car sales by 2030, a solution for battery manufacture and recycling becomes increasingly critical. To address this Cirba Solutions, a leading battery materials and management company, has chosen Jacobs, a global professional services firm, to enhance its manufacturing capacity for sustainable electric vehicle (EV) battery materials across North America.

This partnership aims to bring more circularity and sustainability to the EV industry, aligning with the growing need for eco-friendly transportation solutions.

Expanding Manufacturing Capacity for EV Battery Materials

Jacobs will oversee the facility design and provide construction support for various site locations, including an expansion project at Cirba Solutions’ lithium-ion processing site in Lancaster, Ohio. The estimated cost of the expansion is $200 million, and it has received substantial financial backing, with over $82 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Koti Vadlamudi, Senior Vice President of Jacobs Global Business Units, emphasizes the importance of a circular and sustainable battery supply chain to decarbonize the transportation sector in North America. He states: “Cirba Solutions’ expansion increases capacity in the U.S. and promotes circularity—helping to make the EV industry, and the world, more sustainable.”

Supporting Technology and Sustainability

Cirba Solutions highlights Jacobs’ alignment with its strategic focus on technology and sustainability. John Kelly, Vice President of Operations at Cirba Solutions, says: “Jacobs’ expertise and knowledge of an environmentally thoughtful approach is consistent with our focus to ensure our construction supports our strategic approach to technology and sustainability.”

This partnership ensures Cirba Solutions is able to continue to handle end-of-life batteries and gigafactory scrap while expanding its operations to include manufacturing.

Jacobs’ Comprehensive Solutions

Beyond their collaboration with battery supply chain clients like Cirba Solutions, Jacobs offers a range of solutions across the EV industry. Their expertise spans vehicle manufacturing, transit decarbonization, power generation and supply, and funding and grant support. This comprehensive approach enables Jacobs to contribute to multiple facets of the EV ecosystem, ensuring a holistic transformation toward sustainable transportation.

The Growing Significance of EVs and Infrastructure Investments

As well as the growing popularity of EVs, Jacobs’ involvement aligns with the bipartisan Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, which authorize federal funding and tax credits for manufacturing, charging, and power infrastructure. This legislative support further reinforces the importance of sustainable transportation and infrastructure development.

Jacobs’ partnership with Cirba Solutions marks a significant step toward expanding manufacturing capacity for sustainable EV battery materials in North America. By leveraging their expertise and experience, Jacobs aims to contribute to a circular and sustainable battery supply chain, advancing the decarbonization of the transportation sector.

With the projected growth of electric vehicles, the collaboration aligns with the evolving needs of the industry and brings battery manufacturing and recycling closer together.
