  • Volkswagen recalled 98,806 ID.4 models from 2021 to 2024 due to faulty door handles that could open while driving.
  • The defect was caused by poor water sealing, damaging the door handle electronics and posing a safety risk.
  • VW dealerships now have replacement parts, and repairs for affected vehicles are free of charge.

The Volkswagen ID.4 has faced its fair share of challenges over the past year, most notably a recall affecting nearly 100,000 units due to faulty door handles. For months, production of VW’s electric SUV was halted, leaving both dealerships and potential customers in limbo.

Volkswagen has resolved the door handle issue, allowing the ID.4 to return to production and sales. This development reactivates operations at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant and brings updated inventory back to dealerships, accompanied by competitive lease offers.

VW Fixes ID.4 Door Handle Safety Issue

The problem was caused by poor water sealing in the electronically controlled door handles. Water could seep in, damaging the electronics and potentially causing the doors to open while the vehicle was in motion, which posed a serious safety risk.

Drivers and passengers of affected vehicles may have noticed an unusual clicking noise as an early warning sign. The recall, issued last September, covered ID.4 models from 2021 through 2024, totaling 98,806 units.

While the fix has taken months, VW has now equipped its dealerships with the necessary replacement parts. Owners can finally get their vehicles repaired free of charge, ensuring the safety and reliability of their electric SUVs.

ID.4 Returns with Competitive Pricing and Lease Deals

For those considering the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, the fix brings it back into focus as a strong option among electric SUVs. With production resuming in Chattanooga, Volkswagen is increasing availability and offering appealing pricing and lease terms. The 2024 ID.4 starts at $38,995, keeping it very competitive in the electric SUV market.

Volkswagen is also introducing a lease deal at $149 per month for 24 months, after the $7,500 EV lease bonus, with $999 due at signing for qualified customers. These offers reflect VW’s efforts to rebuild trust and boost interest following the recall pause.

VW ID.4 Balances Range Power and Comfort

The ID.4’s appeal lies in its balanced offering of performance, comfort, and practicality. Equipped with a standard 82 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, the base model delivers an EPA-estimated range of 275 miles. Opting for the all-wheel-drive variant slightly reduces the range to 255 miles but adds improved traction and a boost in power, reaching 295 horsepower.

Inside, the cabin highlights user-friendly technology and spaciousness, accommodating up to five passengers with ease. The 12-inch touchscreen, standard on the 2024 model, integrates seamlessly with features like navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

For those prioritizing convenience, the optional heat pump system ensures efficient climate control even in colder weather, which is a thoughtful touch for regions where EV range can be affected by temperature fluctuations.

Volkswagen ID.4 Balances Practicality and Value

While the recall raised valid concerns, VW’s transparency in addressing the issue and commitment to offering free repairs deepen the brand’s focus on customer safety. The ID.4 now presents a solid choice for those looking for a practical, family-friendly electric SUV at an accessible price point.

Potential buyers should consider both the strengths and weaknesses. The ID.4’s charging speeds are sufficient but may not compete with the quickest options in its class. Additionally, the infotainment system could feel more responsive. Despite these points, the vehicle’s overall value, combined with Volkswagen’s attractive leasing options and warranty coverage, remains appealing.
